Format & Genres

Serial

Serial

A Drama serial is a prewritten show with a predtermined amount of episodes which means it will run for a certain time and then stop. This is similar to doctor who and Babylon 5. Shows like thses are written to edn and sometimes they do spin off such as Doctor Who which has more spin offs than any other shows.

Serial Televisions Shows

Serial Televisions Shows

There are many great examples of serial telvsion progammes like: Game of Throne, Walking dead and Prision Break. These shows have had many series and some are still ongoing this are usually in non linear structure as they do use flashbacks and various stories are being told. Serials are series of television programs that rely on a continuing plot that unfolds in a sequential episode-by-episode fashion. Serials typically follow main story arcs that span entire television seasons or even the full run of the series, which distinguishes them from traditional episodic television that relies on more stand-alone episodes.

Series

Series is very differnet from a serial television as it does not no the ending as it shot each week and is dependant on views and streaming by the audience. Series has various episodes and seasons they take regular breaks called mid season finale so that they can get a break from fliminng it also helps drag the seaon to be a lot longer. As they have a long break between each season this is,usually around 3 months to one year between the beginning of each season.

Series television

Series television

A series is a programme that is usually broadcasted either daily or weekly, a series is where the same characters are used and tell a basic plot and sometimes tell a different story each episode. series's are don't have a fixed length and they are usually divided into multiple different series's. While there is no actual defined length the TV industry does typically favour longer television series's over single dramas. For example, The Simpsons is an American animated sitcom which shows a satirical depiction of working-class life, represented by the Simpson family with each episode being based on a different storyline in the fictional town of Springfield.

Single Camera

Single Camera

A Single Camera production is piece of media which is filmed with a single camera, this is usually low budget productions like music videos, tv episodes etc. They also typically have a lot of editing during the filming with multiple different characters having conversations.

Single Camera Drama

Single Camera Drama

A single drama is usually broadcasted only once, it typically provides a presentation of real life and is often based on issues that are more relatable and appropriate for a television audience. In a single camera there's a variety of narrative form to consider as well. Narrative form is the structure in which the movie tells a story, narratives appears throughout media and society, they can be found in comics, books, novels, television shows and even commercials. While they may also appear frequently in fiction films they do appear in all basic types of films. A Narrative is an account of a string of events that occur in a space and time, they don't unfold randomly but instead they unfold as an ordered series of different events that are connects by the logic of cause and affect. This logic ties together the character traits, goals , obstacles and actions.

Narrative Structure

Narrative Structure

Linear

Linear

Linear means that the structure is in chronological order which means that its from begening middle and end. Most television proagmmes are in linear format they will tell the televsion show in order very simialr to films. Examples of linear would be soaps which dont use flashbacks and tell the story in a one order. Game of thrones is another exmaple as the stroy line progresses in the order of events.

Non Linear

Non linear is the oppsite of linear there is no chronolgical order to it and it has things like flashbacks and the story shift beweteen diffrenet scenes this also helps the audince to undertstand the story if they might have skipped a scene and the come back to it. Its very much like a puzzle some parts now make sense when the flashbacks are played. In addition to this there are some shows that dont have any order at all they just have new espsode on somthing new these are mostly cartsoons like Simpsons, Family guy and Rick and Morty.

Multi-Strand

Multi-Strand

A single strand usually has one set storyline, this indicates that within the single strand the narrative would be focusing more on a particular person (protagonist) and would mainly be focusing on them throughout the whole thing. This helps the audience to be able to focus on the protagonist as the story would be built around the protagonist from beginning to end, making it easier to follow. An example of a single strand narrative would be

A multi-stand narrative is when a narrative film has several storylines and plots within one particular narrative and it'll focus on different types of people rather then one particular person. The entire point of a multi-strand narrative is so that the audience are able to see all of the different types of characters within the narrative.

Narrative strucures

A reaslist and anti realist narrative are very n

A realist structure is one thats reaslistic and may even be base off a true story like crime and documentries

A anti-realist is a structure where basically anything can happen like cartoons. The types of genres that this will usually come under is things like Sci-fi,action, horror etc.

Technical Methods

Technical Methods of SCP

Single Camera Techniques. a single camera technique is when a production such as documentaries, dramas and comedies use just one camera for filming; every shot and angle is used with the same camera.

Cons

There are some negatives for single camera techniques. In single camera you are limited to what you can do filiming as you will only be able to take one shot.. Futhermoe all the equipment has to be in one place so it will take time to move sets.

Pros

There are various pros of using a single camera in a production. One of them is that you can observe all the work as you go. In addition to this is also a lot cheaper that to have one camera than two or three. If you did have other camera then you have to worry about them being seen by another.

Natural Lighting- This is used to create a natural feeling to the shot only relying on the sun or moon relfection for the scene using no special effects.

Lighting

Lighting is very important in single camera film productions and any production for that matter. Lighting can define in a scene as it used to create mood and amtmosphere.

Low key lighting- This is often used to hide features using a single light to display only what is wanted to be seen in the shot.

High key lighting- High key lighting is a style of light for film, television, or photography that aims to reduce the amount of lighting in a scene.

Ambient Lighting- Its is the combination of light reflections from various surfaces to produce a unforum illmination called ambince light.

Framing

Framing

Extreme long shot- which is when a shot is taken from a distance perhaps even a quarter mile away. This is genrally usesd to set the opening film of a film.

Medium Shot- This usually just included a shot of a person from waist up and is typically ised for dialouge puproses.

Close up- A close up focuses on the characteres face or specfic detail of mise en scene. A film maker will use this to make the audince feel more comfortable or less comfortable with a charcter.

Camera Angles

High angle- This looks down at the audince and makes them feel vulnerbale and intamatding. It feels more perosnel.

Eye angle-This is level with the charcter eyes making the audience feel more equal with the character in the focus.

Low angle- This makes the audience feel more insignnificant than the character and makes him/her seem more scary and intimidating.

Oblique/canted angle- Sometimes the camera is tileted to show something is unusual or off- blalcne and can cause dicomfort to the audience.

Movement

Pans- Movement which scans a scene horizonatlly. The camera is placed on a tripod, which operates as a stationary axis point as the camera is turned, foten to follow a moving object which is kept in the middle of the frame.

Tilts- Similar to a pan but only that it moves vertically instead.

Crane shots- A crane shot is basically a dolly shot from the air and is

mainly used for when trying to get a birds-eye view

Dolly shots- This is when the camera is plave on a trolly or a vechicle and follows the character tacking them in the lense its often used to make smooth transition from long distance to close up.

Sound

In single camera production's sound is easier to control as you only have one camera. If the video

source is from one camera you only need one sound source. This saves money and time when it comes to editing.

In multi camera production sound is usually recorded on both cameras. This can make things harder when editing the footages to get the sound synced to whats being recorded. Recording on both cameras can be better though for if one of the recordings malfunctions you have a back up. The problem with this though is the cost of to recording devices.
