Terrorism

What is terrorism and why should we care?

What is terrorism?

Terrorism is the use or threat of violence that aims to spread fear in a population in order to advance a political, ideological or religious cause. Terrorism is more of a strategy than just a random act of violence.

What

Why should we care about terrorism?

We should care about terrorism because it is an important issue that should be fixed. Around the world, terrorism is the cause of many deaths and terrorism questions our sense of security.

Why

Endangers Lives

Due to the atrocious effects from terrorist attacks, thousands of innocent lives are lost every year.

Would the numbers make you care?

  • In 2014, there were an average of 1,122 terrorist attacks, 2,727 deaths, and 2,899 injuries per month worldwide.

  • In Afghanistan, there were a total of 9431 civilian casualties in 2015. This number includes 3129 people dead and 6302 injured. In the casualties, 4642 were men, 775 were women, and 1116 were children.

Would the stories make you care?

On June 3, 2017 a white van sped across London Bridge, ramming into a crowd of pedestrians. Shortly afterward, the three assailants leapt out of their vehicle, brutally stabbing people in nearby Borough Market. This blood-curdling attack is only the latest of three terror incidents that have rocked the United Kingdom in the past 10 weeks alone, leaving 33 people dead and injuring many more. In addition to numerous middle-eastern nations, Belgium, Germany, France, Russia, and the United States have all grappled with terror attacks since the beginning of 2016, as ordinary people—husbands, wives, children, sisters, and brothers—have succumbed to tragic acts of violence. The tragedies happening around the world are atrocious and should not happen to anyone, and as human beings we all have a responsibility to help a fellow person in danger .

Questions peoples' sense of security

3

A small band of terrorists, a tiny fraction of a percent of the global population, have succeeded in changing most of our lives. Terrorism now questions our decision to leave our house daily as this catostrophic force is unpredictable. Terrorism questions peoples' sense of security in their own country and even their own homes.

How people feel?

The armed forces are here to protect the country from threats, but what happens if people don't feel safe in their own country? Polling data from the Chicago Council on Global Affairs shows that 42 percent of Americans feel their country is less safe than it was before Sept. 11, 2001. Additionally, 9 out of 10 people (89%) argue that terrorism was somewhat likely to be a part of life in the future. As much as people want to evade it, it is a fact that Americans don't feel safe in this nation even though it is the 49th safest country in the world. We can not imagine how many other people around the world are fearing for their safety in different countries.

How professionals feel?

Rosa Brooks, an Associate Dean at Georgetown University Law Center, conveys how the 9/11 attacks shattered more than lives and property. The attacks as well as the U.S. government’s response shattered the boundaries between war and peace. By definition, a “war on terror” can have no clear boundaries in time or space. In the post 9/11 era, Americans can no longer define the battlefield or the enemy with any clarity. We can no longer define what counts as a “weapon”. A civilian plane, a truck, or a line of malicious computer code? Rosa Brooks portrays that people can no longer feel safe in their country because they do not know where the threat lies. It is not right for people to feel this way in their home and there should be something done to address the problem of terrorism.

Rebuttal

Terrorism is very out spread, so how can

the various factions be identified and obliterated?

Counter-Argument

Even though terrorism is very widespread, data from the International Risk Management Institue on Al Qaeda (AQ) says,"The global reach of AQ is a source of great concern. More than 3,000 of its members have been arrested in 98 countries since September 11, which is evidence that AQ exists in at least half the world's countries. AQ's tentacles may reach into all regions of the globe. It is questionable whether the civilized world's law enforcement, intelligence, and military apparatus will ultimately be successful in removing the AQ threat in the near term. On a 5– to 10–year horizon, their chances are much better." The Institue is explaining that though it will take time to successfully remove the threat of terrorist organization, the chances of this happening are much better if multiple countries are working together with combined resources rather than a few countries to identify an enourmous threat.

Summary

There is no doubt that we are at a pivotal moment in history. How the world's civilized nations collectively fight against terrorism will determine the future course of international relations. Lives are lost and ones that are not lost question whether or not they are safe from threats. As humans, we have a duty to protect each other from harm, save lives, and to provide assurance to individuals that they are not in harm. Terrorism is not something that we should look at and fear, but rather something that we should look at and have the confidence that no one will be harmed again.

Call to Action

In conclusion, global powers should alot more attention and funds to the United Nations Office of Terrorism to eradicate the issue of terrorism.
