The four parts of Mass

By Lakshana and Andrea

Parts of Mass

Introductory Rites

Introductory rites

The procession, which includes the altar boys, lectors, communion ministers, and the priest, begins the Mass. This ceremonial procedure, known as the entry rite, is frequently accompanied by a hymn or music that sets the tone for the Mass. The Introductory Rites are designed to prepare our hearts to receive and participate in worship. We approach with contrition and humility (expressed in the 'I Admit' prayer), while also celebrating God's redemptive work through His Son Jesus Christ (reflected in the Gloria).

Liturgy of the word

Liturgy of the word

The proclamation, exhortation, and teaching of Christ's Gospel is part of the Liturgy of the Word. It begins with the Opening Prayer, then the First Reading (from the Old Testament), a responsorial psalm, the Second Reading (from the New Testament), and a Gospel reading. These Gospel readings have been carefully selected to correspond with the Church's Liturgical Calendar. The homily of the priest then provides a better understanding, right interpretation, and practical application of God's Word. The Liturgy of the Word finishes with the Profession of Faith and the Faithful's Prayers.

Liturgy of the Eucharist

The preparation of the gifts (offertory procession) opens the Liturgy of the Eucharist. The Eucharistic Liturgy commemorates Christ's supreme love and self-giving on the cross for us. The priest consecrates (makes holy) our gifts by reciting what Christ said at the Last Supper, breaks the bread, and then invites us to partake of the Eucharist (Communion), which joins us to the Body of Christ. This is how we enter into the Paschal mystery.

Concluding Rites

Concluding rites

We are dispatched with God's blessing to introduce Christ to the world in the Concluding Rites. The Eucharistic experience ought to inspire us to invite everyone to the Paschal Feast and to spread our delight to others.
