Behavior Change Plan

Intro

duction

Description

  • The target behavior that I intended to change was my frequency of exceeding the speed limit or better known as "speeding."

  • I did this by substituting this habit with driving at or below the speed limit.

Intro

Definition

  • Target behavior: speeding or driving above the speed limit every time I drive anywhere: on any street, road, highway, or tollway.

  • Defining target behavior: “speeding” behavior refers to anytime that a person is driving above the speed limits posted for each street, road, highway, and tollway.

  • Replacement behavior: driving on or below the speed limit.

  • Defining replacement behavior: driving the speed limit or below refers to anytime that a person is driving exactly on or below the speed limit that is posted for every street, road, highway, and tollway.

Intervention Plan

Methods

Method

  • I used self-management and positive reinforcement in the form of a token economy system with tangible and consumable rewards. I had a little calendar in my car to track my token economy system, and every time I drove somewhere, I made notes if I was able to remain on or below the speed limit during that trip.

  • I rewarded myself with a car sticker on the calendar. Once I gained 40 stickers on my calendar, I was able to redeem them for a meal at a fancy restaurant (consumable reinforcer) or an item off my Amazon wishlist for room improvement (tangible reinforcer) with a value of 25 dollars or less.

  • In order to make the reward value of the token system more valuable, I used establishing operations to deprive myself of eating at fancy restaurants or buying anything for room improvement that is not a reward from my token economy system.

Problems

  • I would forget to write down the details of the trip & would have to guess afterwards.

  • Room improvement stuff and meals at fancy restaurants were not a good incentive.

  • I would purposely not look at the speed I was at, so I could technically say that I was on the speed limit.

  • I was still buying room improvement stuff for my room, regardless of my token system.

  • I never even used the token economy system because I always promised myself rewards but never went through with them.

Problems

Initial Intervention

Antecedents: Motivating Operations (Establishing Operations)

Behavior: Self management through tracking and recording data

Consequences: Positive Reinforcement (token system) and negative reinforcement.

Initial Intervention

Phase 1 & 2

Results

Phase 2 & 3

Anaylsis

  • Initial baseline was not stable

  • Baseline-intervention phases were moderate to low mainly

  • Withdrawal of intervention results in return to baseline

Anaylsis

Effectiveness

  • The behavior change plan was not effective - there was more speeding than driving on the speed limit.

  • The objective was not met within the time frame - the goal was to get 40 stickers on my calendar, and I only received 34.

  • I took a total of 73 trips during the two-week baseline-intervention phases.

  • I was speeding for 39 of those trips and only stayed on or below the speed limit for 34 trips.

Effectiveness

Maintenance & Generalization

M & G

  • I could maintain and generalize your behavior by giving myself positive reinforcement when I drive on the speed limit in the form of tangible rewards.

  • Also, by soliciting reinforcement when there are passengers in the car with me - they can praise me when I am driving on the speed limit and boo me when I am not.

  • I have not been maintaining my behavior after the intervention phase ended because I still have not resolved the main issue that causes me to speed, which is my time management.

Reflection

Reflection

  • None of the behavior prinicples where helpful.

  • I thought that positive and negative reinforcement would be effective but they were not because I would not implement them.

Participating in their own behavior change process before working with clients is critical for behavior analysts and clinical psychologists because it helps them to get first-hand knowledge and empathy for the obstacles and complexities involved in modifying behavior.

Professionals can better grasp the emotional and psychological parts of the process by going through their own behavior change journey, allowing them to provide more effective counsel and support to their clients.
