History

of

Socialization

Before the numerous apps and media that birthed from the internet, in order to meet new friends or a potential partner one had to go out into the world and socialize directly with others.

Children are now growing up in a digital world, being raised by iPads instead of attentive parents, and are taught math by A.I.programs instead of real teachers in a classroom. With this comes an array of differences in how this new generation of humans interact with each other and the world around them, but most importantly how they grow socioemotionally.

AND

Innovation

Mental health has long been a highly debated and underlying problem afflicting the world as a whole, but especially the United States. Because of adversities within our society, mental health was not taken seriously and these issues were not properly understood, studied, or addressed for decades.

Mental health issues have become more prevalent in the youth of our world than ever, and this impact was only compounded when the world was closed due to the coronavirus.

CHanges during covid-19

Everyone can think back to the time of middle and high school, having the innocent want to be popular. In today's social structure, but now just as if not more important are followers. In a reviewed article from Doctor Al Omari, it is reported that before the start of the covid lockdowns teens spent an average of 5.46 hours a day on social media, with that turning into almost 10 hours a day or more during the lockdown, thus exacerbating its negative effects.

While some teens may have been scarcely affected by the negative aspects of social media, they now are much more susceptible.

In a statement released by the American Academy of Pediatrics, as of October 2021, we are currently facing a national adolescent mental health crisis. From 2010 to 2018, the number of mental health concerns and related suicides steadily increased.

by 2020, suicide was the second largest cause of death for youth aged 10 to 24 (AAP, 2021).

Social media can be dangerous.

How do we fix that?

Oladimeji Ajegbile

1. The first solution is to turn the bad of social media into good. Looking at social apps and networks rom a different perspective, the data shows these digital social communities can provide an abundance of resources to those struggling with mental health afflictions

2. A great way to help combat the addictivenness of social media is for parents or guardians to help instill good media-use habits in their children.Parents setting standards and precedents from an early age creates healthy habits that help the child grow and experience life in a balanced manner.

3. The best defense against this is being informed about mental health afflictions. If you are able to spot signs in yourself and your loved ones, we can better protect those around us. This same principal goes for the companies behind the social media we use
