Introduction

In this presentation I willl be discussing about the Daily Life in New France. Some topics that I will cover include: transportation, economy, and employement.

The New France Economy

Economy

New France made a lot of money from things like The fur trade and fishing. They also made money by sending all of Canada's natural resources to Europe.

The Fur Trade

  • The Fur Trade was a very important part to the survival of the people of New France.
  • The Europeans traveled to Canada in search for resources. They had to work with the First Nations.
  • They took the Beaver furs and took it back to France and made profitout of it.

  • Another way that the Europeans made money was by fishing.
  • They realized that Canada had many fish so they traveled here
  • One of the fish species were cod fish
  • The First traveler to arrive was John Cabot.

France is powerful but has limited land mass.

  • They had limited resources.

  • France had more population density

  • Canada offers abundant natural resources,

Employment

Employment

New France had a variety of jobs like we have today. Some of the jobs are similar to the jobs that we have today, and some may be different. A major difference is that only some jobs are for girls and some jobs are for boys.

3. Priest - a priest is a religious leader, in other words, the leader of a church

3. Filles du Roi - The New France population wasn't growing fast enough, so the king of France sent Filles du Roi over to get married and have children. Filles du Roi translates to "King"s Daughters".

Mixed Gender Jobs

Today, a man or woman could do pretty much any job. Back in New France, only a certain amount of jobs were available for both women and men. Here are a few:

2. Habitants - The Habitants were a group of French settlers who came to New France to live a better life.

3. Clergies - Clergies mostly conducted things like marriages, funerals, and baptisms.

Transportation

The Europeans had very different ways to get around. Today, we have cars, trains, buses and planes, but back then, things were different and they weren't invented yet. They had things like horses & Wagons and canoes. A lot of the time, they got around on foot. Transportation is fit under 2 categories; Land and water.

  • The people in New France traveled extensively on foot.
  • Horses and wagons were common modes of transportation for the people.
  • Various land transportation methods were used in New France.

Water Transportation

  • French people used a big ship for transportation on water when they came to Canada.
  • First Nations introduced them to canoes for traveling across rivers and the Great Lakes.
