Africa used to be very poor and undeveloped. In 1854, they were just starting to live off of the many imports they were getting. They were thriving off the 5 million Brittish pounds worth of imports they were receiving.
Europe was jealous of Africa
The reason Europe was jealous of Africa is because Africa had a lot of resources that Europe wanted. This is because as said before, Africa got a lot of imports for good deals as they were developing in 1854. As their country started to build up, they started making money by exporting the things they didn't need to other countries who needed it badly so they could get good deals by making money on the theings they didn't need and what other countries did need.

Europe attempted to steal Africa's resources. They did this because Africa had more resources than them. They were mad because Africa made about $5 million pounds from imports and they didn't want Africa to grow too much and be better than them.
