College-Level Writing Strategies

Professor Henning

ENC 1101

Getting Started

When you begin writing an essay, you should begin by asking yourself, What is my rhetorical situation? Who is my audience? What is my genre? What stance am I taking?

Careful Consideration Of Your Subject

Your answers to these questions will help you carefully consider the subject of your essay and how you should go about addressing it.

Doing Research

Conducting research is an incredibly important part of ENC 1101. This class culminates in a lengthy research paper, after all!

Doing Research

When appropriate for your rhetorical situation, doing research can demonstrate you've thoroughly and seriously considered your subject and the multiple viewpoints on it. Doing research can also help you identify connections among different ideas and allow you to synthesize those ideas with your own thoughts.

What Is A Thesis?

A thesis statement is, quite simply, your main argument distilled into one or two sentences. In most forms of academic writing, you are expected to state your main argument explicitly. For our purposes and in most genres of academic writing, the thesis statement goes at the end of the introductory paragraph.

Clear & Qualified Thesis Statement

Clear thesis statements are important because they help your reader know what you are trying to argue/prove.

How To Qualify Thesis Statements

In order for a thesis statement to be effective and arguable, it generally needs to be qualified. Qualifying your thesis shows that you acknowledge exceptions or other perspectives. (There are always at least two sides to every argument, after all!)
