CCR TASK 3

By Bianca

How did your production skills develop throughout this project?

Pratical Workshops

PRATICAL WORKSHOPS

Part of our prodcution for our opening sequence consisted us having to do practical workshops to get comfortable and fimilar with the camera.

Setting it up

Setting up the camera

In this workshop I learnt how to set up a film camera onto a tripod which I had never done before. I learnt how to bubble the camera onto the tripod, I got familiar with the various functions on the camera such as white balance, Iris, exposure, and Ios.

Furthermore, I also learnt how to focus the camera by first zooming all the way into the eye of the subject then fousing it until the screen was clear.I took the skills I learnt within this workshop and applied it when filiming my sequence.

180 Degree Rule

Filming scenes

(180 degree rule)

On our second workshop we got to get hands on with the camera and practice filming. We had to apply the 180 degree rule technique to practice how to film an effective scene. I also learnt to first film our scenes in a wide shot then mid shots and then close ups.

Furthermore, I also discovered how to use the film terminology within a set such as "stand by", "roll camera", "action" and more. This helped our team work effectively and it avioided us confusion by following this ordered terminology. The rule of thirds was also a new term in film that I learnt. It is when you divide teh camera into thirds, the vertical and horizonatl lines that crossed were the sweet spots in where is best to place your characters and subjects. This is because it creates a more visually pleasing compostion for the auidence.

Research & Planning

RESEARCH

&

PLANNING

I also developed my production skills through planning and researching by storyboarding, putting a narrative together where as group we brainstormed different camera angles, shots and frames.

Storyboarding

Storyboarding was useful in helping me develop production skills. This is because when creating the storyboard for our sequence it helped us plan out each shot with detail by including from what camera angle it would shot, the framing, and what would be included within the shot, mis-en-scene wise.

This helped me visualize how the opening sequence would look like. It also helped us develope our sequence by knowing if things needed changing and if our narrative made sense.

Story boarding was useful for our shoot day as it helped us as a team know what props/equipment would be needed.

It also helpe m with communication across my team as we all wroked together incoperating our input into it.

Location & Cast

Hunting for location/cast

Hunting for a location and cast was also useful for learning and developing my production skills. This is because as a team we had to think of the most effective and suitable place to use as a loaction to shoot in. We decided the theatre was the best place as it mad ethe most sense and it saves time as it's avaible on campus. Scouting for teh right cast is also an important factor in production. This is because as a team we had to think of who would be best to play our charcter we created, that was also a suitable age, and had some experience in acting.

These factors are vityally imporatnt for getting ready for our shoot day and it required effective decision making, and communication across our team. This helps a sequence run smoothly on the shoot day leading to a more polished final product.

Shoot Day

The shoot day was also quite important when it comes to improving and developing my production skills. This is because I took all the skills I learnt from workshops and the planning/research and applied it on the shoot day.

SHOOT DAY

Research and Planning

Research/planning

The pre research and planning was very useful on the day of our shooting. This is because we knew what props to bring in. Although we didnt manage to get all the props on the day, we still knew what narrative we wanted to create and had to adapt with resources we had around us even if it meant having to slightly change our narrative.

The storyboarding was helpful as we were able to set up our props the way we wanted and we knew what camera angles we wanted to use for each shot.

Camera/Tripod

Having the practical workshops where I learnt how to set up a camera and attach it to a tripod was extremly helpful for our shoot day and saved my team losts of time. We were able to effectively set it up fast and change the white balance to fit the lighting we needed to indoor. I was then able to change exposure on the camera, to slightly make it darker to fit the tone of the sequence we wanted to create. Knowing how to focus the camera, and in what order to shoot each scene by first shooting in wide then ending in close up.

Camera/tripod

Directing my teamates

Directing team & actors

Having the practical workshop of learning the terminology in film was really helpful during my shoot day. When filiming our sequence with the camera I was able to effectively direct my teammates when shooting using the terminology to make sure everyone was ready and prepared before saying 'action' to direct our actor to start acting. This helped prevent confusion when filiming and this saved us time during the shoot day as things ran relatively smoothly once we started filming.

Editing our sequence

EDITING

WORKSHOPS

Once we finished filiming our sequence. We had to edit our footage we filmed. Editing is an important part in film because it transforms raw footage into a finished motion picture. There are many ways an editor can edit a film to make auidences emotionally connect with the screen.

Assembling it together

First step was choosing which footage we wanted to incorperate in our sequnce. Once we did that, we color coordinated each scene so it would be clearer for us when editing. My skills in editing developed as I was able to cut on motion to create that fluidity within our opening sequence much more effectively after having those workshops.

Assembling it together

What developed was our shot-reverse-shot skill because we had minimal practice of this in the workshop and our sequnce required this kind of editing. So I defiently developed skills with that technique. Another thing was ediitng with soley close-ups. We did do this in a workshop but when it came to our sequence some of our close up shots werent to the quality we wanted, so that resulted in us having to rely on our wide shot. What changed in my production skills was having to solve issues with poor quality footage and find ways aorund that to still make our sequnce to the standard we wanted and make sense for the auidence.

Editing our diegetic/non diegetic sound

Firstly, what developed was my skills in diegetic sound, as I had never done this in the workshops. We had to lower our foortage we filmed, we did this by going to the levels options and turning it down as some of her actions were to loud.

Editing Sound

Editing our music ontop of our sequence also was a skill I developed as we as a team first had to search for royalty free music that would for our sequence and express what we wanted to auidences. We then also had to lower the music to -5. Then another skill I developed was adding sound effects such as the door closing/opening. Which was already available on the editing software. I also learnt how to make the sound flow throughout the sequnce by using the grain tool.

Final Thoughts

FINAL OUTCOME

My final thoughts about this task is that I think my production skills had developed over the course of making our opening sequence. This is because if I first look back to the workshops where I didn't even know how to set up a camera, or what the 180 degree rule was, or even how to edit a sequence. Then I look to my shoot day and editing my sequnce, I can see that I was much more fimilar with these skills and was able to preform them with slight more confidence then I would've if I didnt have those workshops.I also learnt new skills that I didnt initially learn in the workshops when it came to the near end duration of our production. such as having to adapt to issues when it came to editing and filiming, adding sound effects and adjusting sound levels of our diegetic and non diegetic sound in our sequence. The video on the right is our complete product of our opening sequence which showcases are improvement of our production skills throughout this project.
