Santiago's Journey

Encounters in Spain

Andalusia, Spain

Beginning of Journey: Santiago keeps on having the same dream, that always ends in a cliffhanger, about being shown the location of a "treasure" found in the pyramids in Egypt.

Starting Point of Journey: Santiago wants to find this "treasure" that the gypsy woman confirmed was treasure. He encounters a king from Salem that talks to him about omens and his personal legend. He sells his sheep to attain this personal legend of his.

King of Salem:

The strange old man that speaks to Santiago is the King of Salem, and he gives him these stones to Santiago named Urmin and Thummim, which would help him along his journey, to keep him in check on his personal legend.

Tangier, Morocco

Encounters in Morocco

Arrival in Morocco: As Santiago arrives in Africa, he realises immediately that he does not know anything about the culture and language that these citizens are practicing. He gets betrayed by the one person that he thought of as a friend, since this friend knew the language the civilians spoke and ways around the town. He loses trust in people and concludes that talking about this treasure would leave him off course from his personal legend.

The 1 Year Stay: He met a crystal merchant at a crystal shop on top of a hill away from the city. The crystal merchant saw that the boy was bringing customers to his shop through the boy's ideas to improve the shop. The crystal merchant allowed Santiago to work for him with a commission based salary. Santiago plans on saving up money to buy his sheep back, since he had lost all hope in a dream that may not be real. The crystal merchant recognized himself in Santiago and gave him a talk about the crystal merchant's personal legend. He spoke a word that intriguied the boy and would soon recognize what it would mean: maktub.

Ecounters in the Sahara Desert/Al Fayoum Oasis

Sahara Desert

The Ride Across the Desert: Santiago decides to use his money, that he saved up, to buy a camel to use to travel to the pyramids in Egypt. He gets into a caravan and starts walking across the desert. He meets this Englishman that shows curiosity towards the alchemist.

The Alchemist:

Encounter with the Englishman

Santiago is intrigued with the amount of books that this Englishman had. The books were about alchemy and Santigo was curious. The Englishman talked to Santiago about the strange things in the world that revolved around the "Soul of the Earth". They talk every day about this things, and then they talked about their reason for being there. They create a strong connection since they both know about personal legends and omens.

Encounters in the Oasis:

Al Fayoum Oasis

Santiago arrives at an oasis, because of a war between rival tribes attacking in the desert. Santiago meets a woman named Fatima and later fell in love with her. He had a vision that an army would invade the Oasis, so he reports it. His vision was correct and he was rewarded handsomely. This caught the attention of the alchemist, which starts to communicate to him and tries to see who Santiago is. He later has to leave the oasis to go find his treasure, which he plans to find and come back to be with Fatima.

Pyramids of Egypt

Journey to the Pyramids: Santiago, with the help of the alchemist, travels to the pyramids to find his treasure, which he later was to be sent on his own by the alchemist. He arrives to the pyramids and starts to dig. Two refugees from the tribal wars found Santiago and forced him to dig for more of the gold that they found with him. Santiago spoke about his frequent dreams and one of them knew where the treasure lies. It was in Spain where he spent his days before as a sheperd in a church.

Digging and Finding The Treasure in Spain

Journey Back to Spain

He arrives at the church to dig up the treasure. He is thankful and conteplates why God would send him on a long journey to the treasure that was so near. He finds the gold chesplate and puts urmin and thummim back onto it. He gets the gold and plans to give a tenth of the treasure to the gypsy lady. But most importantly, he will return to Fatima with this wealth and live the rest of his days with her.
