Siddhartha Guatama, widely known as Buddha, was born, however the exact year of his birth and death is unknown. After seeing the sorrow that many people endure in everyday life, Buddha established Buddhism.

563 bce

486bce

The first Buddhist council met at Ragir, the capital of the Magadha empire, and was led by Buddha's successor, Mahakasyapa. Buddha's most significant followers spoke from memory to those present. Buddhist teachings were divided into discourses, discipline, and greater knowledge, a concept that is still employed in modern teachings.

The second great Buddhist council meets for the first time. This is frequently cited as the genesis of thereavada Buddhism. This is one of the two most significant branches of Buddhist belief, along with mahayana buddhism.

386 bce

Ashoka was the ruler of the Mauryan kingdom in India. During his reign, he proclaimed Buddhism the official religion, converted to and practised it, and supported its growth, resulting in Buddhism leaving India.

272-231bce

Mahayana Buddhism is born. This is one of the two most major Buddhist schools, and it, like Theravada, claims to teach the essential foundations of Buddhism.

100-200ce

The Buddhist Monastic University of Nalanda, India, has opened its doors. While its origins may be traced back to this time period, allusions to the location stretch back to Buddha's time, with it being mentioned as a centre of study for notable scholars such as Nagarjuna.

500-600 CE

845 CE

China is experiencing widespread Buddhist persecution. Emperor Wuzong aimed for, and was successful in, wiping out all non-native religions from China. This included, but was not limited to, a strong anti-buddhism sentiment in China.

The world's greatest religious monument, Angkor Wat, is completed. Originally built as a Hindu temple, the monument is changed to a Buddhist temple in the 14th century. The date range is based on King Suryaverman ll's reign, who had the monument constructed during his reign.
