Conflict (Internal vs. External)

  • External: Catherine wants to have a simple life where she owns a bakery with her best friend Mary Kate. She wants only to be known as making the most scrumptious treat in all of hearts but, the small not so clever king, wants to marry her and make her queen.
  • Internal: Cath falls in love with the new and mysterious Kings Joker, her mother and father wants her to be queen, the king wanted to marry her but all she wants is to lead a simple life with the love of her life.

Inciting Force one

(External) At the kings black and white ball Cath leaves early in hopes of missing the kings announcement for their engagement, little did she know that the Jabberwocky would strike for the first time in hundreds of years in the lands of hearts at the ball.

Inciting forces

Inciting force two

(Internal)The joker steals away Cath the night the king ask for her courtship( in this 1800-1900 like culture this was risky and “bad manners”) she secretly leaves

with the joker and his

oddly large crow to go to a real tea party. This is the point

where she meets the

mad hatter and Rabbit from the land of Chess through the looking glass.

Inciting force three

(External)After Catherine and Jest confessed their love for each other, Catherine went with the king to the theatre. There the Jabberwocky attached Catherine, there she also pulled the sword that only appears to royal blood(????) out of the joker's hat. But she was injured, so Jest took her to the sisters at the well. Once there he made a deal with them for fecal (Magical healing stuff, super sweet flavoring)

Rising action

rising action

Rising Action one

Rising Force One

(internal) Rising action number one is after the joker helps Catherine by taking her to the well and having the sisters help her, he can't tell anyone because it's just a ‘legend’. So, once they are found Jest is accused of kidnapping Catherine. But, to save her from having to tell her family and the King that he healed her and they gave their hearts to each other he instead he incriminated himself to save Catherine. This made very angry because he said that she was under his spell, this made everything she said worthless.

Rising action two

(Internal) The second rising action is after Jest left her and told everyone that she was under his spell, she became very irritated and passive aggressive towards everyone. After the “rescue” of Catherine the King had another masked ball, in which Jest attendant, right under the nose of the king. The King publicly proposed to Cath, in which Jest bursts in the doors and yells to Catherine that there is a way that she can be with him, have her bakery and full fill his mission to bring the white queen her heart. She obviously runs to him, and they run away together leaving the King in embarrassment.

Rising action three

(Exernal) The final and third rising action is Jest takes Catherine to his od friend the Hatta. He then very hesitantly takes them through the mirror to the ‘well sisters’. They are the only ones that let people cross the looking glass. Once on the other side they tell a prophecy of the four (Raven, Jest, Catherine and Hatta) and how their fate is sealed. The maze to the door to chess always shows what your leaving behind, to prove if your worthy. Catherine see’s Mary Ann at Peter Peter pumpkin patch about ot be eaten by the Jabberwocky, she decides to go back alone and tells Jest to wait for her. When she goes back to save her, Jest isn't far behind.

Climax/Falling actions

Falling Actions

The first falling action is the injustice death of Jest the joker, Catherines love. With Catherine blaming her life long friend mary ann for his death, she also comes to learn that Hatta, came to Hearts with pumpkin seeds from chess. Then following the obvious course when you take seeds from an unknown terrain and throw them into new a earth/land. This made Catherine hate Hatta more than even after Mary Ann.

The second falling action is after the death of Jest Catherine went home and Mary Ann told a story depicting Jest as the hero. Catherine cam home empty of life and full of madness. Instead of her dreams creating lemon trees or red roses, they created black dead roses, forming around her bedposts. After throwing out Mary Ann, the sisters that offered Cath a deal. For the heart of a queen they could live forever, and in return they would give her Peters Peters head.

The last falling action was an effect caused by Catharines deal with the ‘Well’ sisters. When she agreed to give them the heart of a queen, she had to become one herself. With her still in a grieving state of mind from Jest, she showed up head to toe in black even with a thin black veil over her face. Knowing that the King would never have the guts to deny her she apologised about the embarrassment she caused him and accepted his engagement proposal. Making her the upcoming Queen of hearts.

Climax

When Cath and the joker go to Peter Peter pumpkin patch to help Mary Ann, thye get caught up with Peter peter, this is where he confessed to knowing his wife is the Jabberwocky and how he tried to keep her locked up. He blamed the Hata for the bad pumpkin seeds and Catherine for stealing one of this pumpkins, because if she didn't his wife would not have eaten her pumpkin pie. After fighting and Raven turning into his reaper form to help, they win with Catherine killing the Jabberwocky. But, when Jest isn't paying attention, peter peter takes his axe and cuts off his head as Catherine was running to him. Raven goes after peter as he runs into the woods and Hatta repeats the sister prophecy to Catherine while she’s weaper holding Jests bloody decapitated body. ( oe to be a murderer, the other to be martyred. One to be monarch the other to be mad)→Relevant to Peter Peter Pumpkin eater, had a wife couldn't keep her, he put her in a pumpkin-shell , and there he kept her very well.

Resolution

(Both) As the book comes to an ends, it resolves in a heartless conclusion, with Peters peters head decapitated. The sisters fulfil their promise to the new Queen of hearts and brings her Peter Peter for her own taste of vengeance. Catherine already full of despair and agony, Raven joins her, perched on the rail next to her as a confidant and friend. When the sisters take her ( Catherines ) heart the entire courtroom witnesses the extraction, Cath is released from her own burden of grief and reins Hearts without a heart.

Resolution

Section Two

Section two

Point of view

Most of the book is written in third person, but at times where the author puts us in the main characters head, it turns to first person. A qoute from page 4 tells us this "You are my crowning joy," she proclaimed, spreading her arms wide over the tarts, as if bestowing a knighthood upon them."

Reliable vs. unreliable

Reliable vs. unreliable

I can’t say the author is reliable but I can’t say their not only because of the context of the book. Hearts is unreliable in itself, its unpredictable and not even the author can simplify that. So, although for example, she brings up the fact that only royal blood can hold the sword yet, never do we know how she was still able to hold the sword without any royal blood. A qoute to show my opion is on pade 301 "The brave King who had sought the Jabberwocky in the forest and slain it with the righteous Vorpal Sword."

Place/Setting

Place/ Setting

The setting is in the land of hearts, it never specifically says where in hearts but most of the time is spent in the courtyards of the castle or at catherines house near turtle cove.

A qoute to reprsent this is on page 11 "We're going forward with or without my parents' approval. We are going to have the nest bakery in all of hearts...."

Authors purpose

Authors purpose

I like to think that the authors purpose was to show that we can have dreams and plans but, life will always have its own plan. Or that you must follow your own path even if you have to let go of those who cherish and love you. To show this I am going to show you a quote from page 11 "Her approval wont matter," Cath said, trying to convince herself as much as Mary Ann. The idea of her mother being angry over this decision, or worse, disowning her, made her stomace curdle. But she wouldnt let ti come to that."

Mood/ Theme statment

Theme Statment

Mood

The top three main theme that most commenly show up are:

  • Good and evil can not become one without one sacerificing the other
  • Quote: "we want the heart of a queen." and to add "You bring me sir Peter to me? And his fate will be mine ot decide?" both on page 416
  • You can't run from father time, even with time on your side
  • On page 430 " Cath could hear it ticking, too loud and too fast, like a maniac countdown. Hatta couln't run from time for very much longer."
  • Not everyoe you love is their to support/help you.
  • "But he will. Besides, can you imagine? you, runninga bakery? why- you'd bwcome and elephant!..." "I wanted to open a bakery" quoted from page 261 and 262.

The mood starts out very whimsical and fairytale like. But slowly as more bad things happen to the main chrater the authors uses a darker theme of words and describe things and events in a more, intense dark way. From page 5 "And after that night, her desserts would not only br known as more beutiful, they would be known as superior in every way." and 302 another to shoe the contrast on page "she bared her own teeth. Off with its head, Off with its head, Off with its- the jabberwocky shudderd suddenly turned away."

Pro: Catherine Pinkerton is the main character

Ant: Peter peter and his wife-King

Section Three

Personality

Pro: Cath is a dreamer, invested in the art of baking she is strong and stubborn. Although usually sweet Cath has a very dark side that we get glimpses of throughout the book. She’s not very loyal but very passionate. To quote page 6 "Part of her wanted to keep the memory like a secret against her chest, but Cheshire would fined out soon."

Ant:Peter peter assumes what people are like before they even have a chance to explain. From what we read about him he’s very protective and hates the upper class. Blaming them for everything wrong in Hearts. His wife, the Jabberwocky, is ambitious and straight forward about what she wants. The few times we actually get to hear a conversation with her, she seems sick and weary.Ant:Peter peter assumes what people are like before they even have a chance to explain. From what we read about him he’s very protective and hates the upper class. Blaming them for everything wrong in Hearts. His wife, the Jabberwocky, is ambitious and straight forward about what she wants. The few times we actually get to hear a conversation with her, she seems sick and weary. On page 408 I quote Catherine " He looked once more at Catherine with hatred so pure and transparent is sent a shock of terror through her. She could see his desperation. She sensed his resolve."

character development

Pro: Cath used to be okay with her life, weary of the king and his obsession with her, she wanted to open a bakery and have a simple life, now she is more than willing to become queen and give her heart to the love of her life to save the other side of the looking glass. This resulting in her having a depressed life with the optimistic unclever king she would have to marry. A quote on page 419 shows just how much more pain shes in at the end of the book "Which is why I brought you a gift. A symbol of my devotion." Her voice cracked, but she shoved the pain down, down, down."

Ant: Peter Peter used to be an average pumpkin patch keeper, with a small average wife. From what we know they kept to themselves and had the sweetest pumpkins in all of hearts. But, when his wife had eaten the bad pumpkins and turned into the Jabberwocky, he turned cranky and made assumptions about them. "I wont let you touch her!" on page 402, peter cried this to Catherine as she was almost going to kill her (Jabberwocky) before we never et to see any king of affection from him ot his wife.

motovation

Motovation

Ant: Peters motivation resonated from his late wife. When she turned into the hideous monster that rampage the city, he became angry at Hatta, Catherine and Jest for making her this way.

Pro: Her motivation the first part of the book was her bakery she wanted, then moving towards just being happy with Jest (Love of her life), then that changes again to saving the other black and white kingdoms with the sacrifice of her heart. A qoute from page

character influenced by the conflict

Character influenced by the conflict

(Ant) The Jabberwocky on one hand was the Conflict, so it was truly was how the transformation shaped Peter Peter and his now dead wife. They were happy but, the love Peter had for his wife turned into revenge and instant anger.

(Pro) Cath didn’t know at the time but when she stole the pumpkin that had the secret ingredient from chess, she was also leading Peters wife to eat another bad pumpkin. This caused her to permanently be the Jabberwocky. Catherine became very guilty after finding out, but blamed Hatta for brining the seeds.

Character impacted by the conflict

character impacted by conflict

(Ant) Peter Peter Lost his wife and life to the Jabberwocky. He became so enraged and fill with lathing that, although his best efforts to save his wife failed, he kept going for revenge. This lead to his demise.

(Pro) Catherine was beaten, bruised and even broken by the main conflict (Jabberwocky). She lost her love to it, her passion and soul was stripped from her, because of PeterPeters reaction to the conflict and the conflict itself. Most of all, she lost her will to live, because all she wanted after the climax was revenge on Peter Peter. So much so, as to give her heart away.

Connection

(Pro) My personal connection to Catherine would be her passion to live her best life, but would give it all up for someone she loves. I see a lot of her in my good friend Heaven. And, like the book heaven has changed so much since even 6 months ago. She’s become ambitious and straight forward but, she’s willing to give so much for her dream to become a ichthyologist. As much as leaving people who won't help her achieve her dream, much like Catherine did before losing Jest. She ( Catherine ) left her family to live the life she wanted with jest, this meant all of hearts, her parents and life long friends.

(Ant) I am going to connect this person to Peter Peter, not for his actions but why and how he reacted to the events. Naomi is much like Peter Peter because he would do absolutely anything for his wife, and even though i haven't known Naomi for long, I can already see how much she would do for those close to her. For example, Peter Peter stood up for his wife even though she was killing people. Naomi become a vegetarian at a young age knowing, she would be criticized by her peers and possibly her family. Both were willing to go above and beyond for what they believed in.

Connection

Section Four

Comparing

I compare the inciting force, climax, or resolution to the plot of titanic. Both Rose and Jack were both from different places but both fell in love. Jack of course representing Jest, have a culture filled background, with crazy friends and madly in love with rose or Catherine. Catherine like rose are upper class and not very happy with it, they want more. In the book you get hooked with Catherine trying avoid the king's proposal, Rose is trying to get away from her mother. At the climax both Jest and Jake are hurt. And the ending isn't a happy story book ending. In heartless an example of this would be “I’m not sure I want to go to a Mad tea party.” Just winked at her “Trust me lady you do” on page 151.

Adding to the end of the book

Adding to the end

With the land of hearts in awe of what she said, Ravens feathers move into the silky black cloak Cath rekanized. He approaches peter peter, the king quivering in his seat, gently mumbling to Cathrine that this is wrong, against hearts code. She didn’t care, all the rage from her mother and father, all her dreams of a bakery and...and Jest. Knowing the man that stole everything from her was dead, didn't give her the release she craved. She was just an empty capsule with no emotion inside, she didn't react when Peters head fell to the floor, even when the Court gasped. Not the slights flinch in her face. “I’ll be in my courtiers” Catherine stood weightlessly from her throne, walking to the door on her right. With Raven flying to her side again, piercing her shoulder they left the heartless body of Peter Peter to the courtroom.

Letter to Author

Dear Marissa meyer,

I am a fan of your writings, personally your famous lunar chronicles make me feel tickled pink. In you’re newer version of the queen of hearts, I love your interpretation of her backround, I love that she had other passions like baking and lawn games. For example, on page 1 " She stepped back t admire her work. The tarts had taken her all moring." and how you incorporated the nursery rhyme ‘Peter Peter’. That was absolutely clever beyond words! Actually, I would love to know why you chose these stories to recreate and not older versions of them, or how you came up with the name 'The Jabberwocky '. I aspire to be able to write words that flow as well as yours, more moments then not I forget I’m reading at all when holding one of your books. I must'ev recamended this book to all my friends by now. Personaly, I would have gone in more orgin of the Vorpal sword and how it ended up in Jests hat and why it was given to Catherine. My favorite character would have to be Raven from heartless. Although he doesent say much and when he does it rymes, he had such a deep bond with Jest, and just how un'cliche his peronality was; I just absolutly loved him. Even his part on page 422 "Even when he didn't, it still took her a full day to realize he yearned for vengance as much as she did.". Thank you for your beautiful work, I hope you continue to write more books (maybe Movie???)

Gratefully,

Wood, Annabelle

Favortie writing part

My favorite writing part is when she shows Catherines dark side in more detail, and how it affects her personality. When the Jabberwocky attacks the theatre, Cath gets hurt. But, I think this triggered it because when this happens Catherine starts almost chanting off with its head, off with its head on and on. She even thinks at one moment as Jest is fighting the beast that they are like and acrobatic act for a carnival, making her laugh hysterically during a bloody fight. Catherine changes so much that when you read, the style starts to wrap itself with the new darker version of catherine. A part from the event one page 300 “It was like being at the circus. Cath could see it all in her Pain-filled delirium. For our next act, please welcome Jest and the jubilant Jabberwocky, best acrobatic team in all of hearts! She started to laugh hysterically.”
