Daylighting
Addressing
the Students
- Uninterrupted floor to ceiling glazing on majority of exterior surfaces
- Plentiful windows to admit natural light and offset dim artificial light
Concerns:
The Special Education Classroom
- Cluttered learning/work environment, particularly in adjacent office
Meeting Earthly
Needs
- Singular window to the outside
- Standard and uninspiring linoleum flooring
- Efficient Storage: Special egg-crate cubbies (in addition to standard shelving) adjacent to windows filter light and ease sensory input for students
- Daylighting: Floor-to-ceiling windows on north and east facades
- Natural Textures and Materials: Hardwood flooring replaces standard linoleum tiles
Concerns:
- Poor acoustic barrier between zen room and adjacent cafeteria
- Reluctantly used as a break room by some faculty and staff
Natural Textures
and Materials
- Autonomy: Choice for special needs students, between individual breakout nooks and sensory seating (for self-regulation), and standard group/individual arrangements
- Natural finishes as a supplement to, or substitution for, artificial materials
- Hardwood/stone flooring, green walls, earth tone paint colors, etc.
Addressing
the Adults
Efficient Storage
Meeting Human
Needs
- Abundant storage solutions built into the architecture
The Teacher's "Zen" Lounge
- Storage spaces blend into the overall layout and don't contribute to a tacky/cluttered atmosphere
Design
Drivers
Autonomy
- Efficient Storage: Shelving units concentrated around kitchen/break room area for convenient access
- Flexible areas of occupation for both students and adults
Design
Proposals
- Autonomy: Choice for faculty and staff, between individual desks for light work and lounge chairs for rest and relaxation
- Diversity between communal and individual spaces allows for personal autonomy and choice
- Daylighting: Floor to ceiling windows along entirety of exterior envelope
- Natural Textures and Materials: Hardwood flooring, fish tanks, and green walls (unable to show in plan) to bring nature indoors
