Topic:

What are the different types of mountains?

Subject: Geography

Class: 6th

The earth's crust is made up of 6 huge slabs of plates which are known as continents. Over the years when there are gigantic moveents in these plates. The surface of the land is smashed into each other. Hence this collision causes the land to push upwards and that is how the mountains you see today are formed.

Mountains vary according to the landforms and are categorized in various types.

The Himalayas are formed of sedimentary rocks as the Indian subcontinent crashed into the Asian plate and pushed up the sediments from the sea to give rise to the tallest mountain ranges in the continent. These were the folds formed due to the sediments are the upper part is known as anticlines, while the lower part the synclines.

In South America, the Andes Mountains were formed due to the collision to the continental plate and the pacific ocean plate.

Some mountains are formed due to the volcanic activities and formed out of the cooling of lava erupted from the volcano.

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are volcanic mountains that rose from the ocean floor.

These mountains are formed by the process in which the molten magma/ lava cools up and builds a cone of rocks.

the dome mountains which rise from large globs of magma under the sea bed. With cooled magma, it forms hard rocks under the sea bed, which are revealed due to erosion sometimes.

Kedarnath is a dome peak situated in Uttarakhand India.

The western ghats mountains are known as plateau mountains.

As we all know plateaus are large plains pushed above the sea level due to internal pressures of the earth. The mountains in these regions are formed due to the erosive properties of the soil. They are noted geologically as large areas of high levels of flat land.

Did you know the strength of the mountains depends on their origin?

As the western ghats mountains are formed from the basalt rock. they are more strong compared to the Himalayan rains as those are sedimentary mountain ranges.

Plateau mountains are often formed by rivers flowing and eroding the plateaus and the mountains are left to be standing between the valleys!
