Barry B. Benson has just graduated from college and is excited to choose his job and start the rest of his life in the hive.
Barry finds out that once he picks his job, he can never change his mind or choose another career. With his non-conformist attitude, Barry refuses to live the rest of his life in the same endless pattern, and seeks a job that would allow him a life of excitement rather than redundancy. He discovers the Pollen Jocks, bees who fly outside the hive to pollinate and get nectar, and debates whether he should go with them for a day, to see life outside the hive.
Barry does not refuse the call to adventure, as his motivation to begin on his adventure is entirely his own. It is his friend, Adam, who tries to discourage him from leaving, but Barry is determined to discover something greater than life within the hive.
The Pollen Jocks are considered the supernatural aid that presents Barry with the opportunity to leave the hive. Although he is "not bred" for pollinating, he is invited to go out on a mission at "0900."
Barry agrees to leave the hive with the Pollen Jocks for a day and see the outside world.
Barry leaves with the Pollen Jocks and is experiencing life outside the hive.
The Jocks get sidetracked by a game of tennis, in which Barry becomes stuck to the ball, losing the Jocks in the process. He then gets trapped inside a moving vehicle, caught in a rainstorm alone, and flies into a house where he is almost killed by the boyfriend of Vanessa, a kind human who saves Barry.
The kind human who sparingly saves Barry's life is Vanessa. Barry debates whether or not he should thank her, but ends up breaking bee code to talk to her. They quickly become friends, despite the objections of their outraged friends and family. Although she does not give him any tangible objects during this meeting, she saves his life and offers her friendship.
Although Vanessa is the "goddess," she also acts as a distraction on Barry's quest to find meaningful work. After their meeting, he daydreams of leaving the hive to spend time with Vanessa, avoiding his responsibilities and decisions.
Barry discovers that the humans were stealing the bees honey for centuries and is outraged. This realization is a turning point in the film where Barry realizes the control that humans have on his culture and life back at the hive.
Once Barry discovers that humans are stealing honey from the bees, he realizes that he must "get to the bottom of it." He confronts a warehouse worker and follows the truck to the Honey Farms where he learns about the enslavement and imprisonment of the bee industry.
After seeing the Honey Farms, Barry knows what his mission in life is: He must sue the human race for their wrongdoing to bees and reclaim their rightful honey! He and Vanessa work together to overcome the defense lawyer and win the trial.
Soon, bees no longer have to work to make honey and shut down their hives, resulting in the lack of pollination and the loss of food and plants, with animal species close behind, and not to mention the suffering of Vanessa's Flower Shop. Barry cannot understand why his friends and family at the hive are upset about having no honey to make. He visits Vanessa for comfort, but she reveals to him the truth about what has resulted from the court case.
To set things right, Barry and Vanessa travel to the Tournament of Roses parade in Pasadena to take home some of the last flowers to pollinate and save the rest of the plants.
However, they encounter a lightning storm on the plane ride home, causing a delay that would be fatal for the flowers. Barry tried to intervene but accidentally knocks out the pilots. Vanessa attempts to fly the plane mostly unsuccessfully, but the plane and flowers are saved when millions of bees help fly the plane safely to the ground.
They successfully saved the flowers and use them to repollinate the world and reverse the damage. As Barry makes his way back to the hive with the other bees, they repollinate the earth with the roses.
Barry starts a law firm with Vanessa when she reopens her flower shop. She breaks up with her boyfriend of 7 years to be with Barry, who becomes a full-time Pollen Jock at the hive.
In the end, Barry fulfills his dreams of finding exciting and unrestricted work both inside and outside the hive. The office becomes a metaphor for the captivation he felt within the hive, yet he flies through a kite that is shaped as a honeycomb, suggesting a balance between both species and worlds.
