Beginning of the Story: In the beginning, they are all working on the farm when dark clouds and a strong, heavy gale blows. Kirsten's mom told her to round up everyone because she suspected a tornado was coming. They stayed in the cellar, the safest place on the farm, and ate vegetables and wrinkled apples.
Middle of the Story: In the middle, Kirsten's mom can't do her work so Kirsten does her chores and her mom's chores like cooking dinner. But one day when Kirsten was sitting with her mom, she felt a tight squeeze on her shoulder. Kirsten was told it was time to rush and get Papa because her mom was about to have a baby. So Kirsten rode Blackie, her family's fastest horse, to the creek to get her dad to help deliver the baby. A few days later, Kirsten was bringing her mom soup and her mom told her she could play with her friends at the barn raising party, that was celebrating the new barn they built and Kirsten's birthday.
End of the Story: Kirsten and her friends finish their quilt,which Kirsten thinks is for Mrs. Winston at the barn raising party. When they finish and Kirsten gets her presents, that is when she realizes the quilt is for her. At the party, Kirsten, her dad, and everyone else dance. After everyone went home, Kirsten went back to the cabin to see her mom. She picked up a quilt square she had and said she was going to use it to make a quilt for her new baby sister.
