Negro History week Turned Black History month

Black History Month

  • Woodson, still determined to do more, felt as if black Americans should be celebrated
  • He announced the first Negro History Week in February of 1926
  • In the years to come, Negro History week used any resources possible to spread the word and spread their message
  • By the 1930s, it was noted that a few white schools had even started to celebrate Negro History week
  • And in February of 1970 Negro History week became Black History Month

Why February?

  • He chose February because it was the month that Abraham Lincoln and Fredrick Douglass were both born
  • Lincoln was assassinated on Feb.12 and his death was mourned by many black americans
  • Douglass day was also Feb.14
  • February was chosen as a way to commemorate these two men and allow Americans to study all the history of their country
