The scientific study of Ancient Egypt.

Why is Egyptology still important

today

A sphinx is a statue carved by the ancient Egyptians that had a body of a lion and the head of a man. The man's head was carved in the likeness of Pharaoh Khafre.

He seems to guard the tombs and pyramids at Giza.

Giza was the first capital of Egypt.

During the Old Kingdom in Egypt, Pyramids were built as tombs for pharaohs.

They were carefully planned and for religious reasons they had to be build on the west bank of the Nile, where the sun set.

Hundreds of thousands of pieces of stone were used to build the pyramids which were moved using levers.

Temples

Were built in front of the pyramids at Giza and along the banks of the Nile.

The Egyptians believed that their gods and goddesses lived in these temples.

Inside the temples was a statue of the of the god who lived there.
