Earth's Atmosphere:

The Ozone Layer

Ozone Layer

Ozone Layer

Joesph Farman, Brian Gardener, and Jonathan Shanklin found the ozone hole

  • The Ozone Layer is a shield that protects us from the suns ultra violet (UV) rays
  • It is consists entirely of oxygen (O3)
  • Ozone depletion is a steady decline in the Ozone layer
  • G. M. B. Dobson invented a spectrophotometer which measures stratospheric ozone from the ground
  • Dobson also established a worldwide network of ozone monitoring stations
  • Thomas Midgley invented Chlorofluorocarbons (CFC) which are refrigerants that deplete the ozone layer

G. M. B. Dobson a British physicist who discovered and studied the Ozone Layer.

Charles Fabry discovered the ozone layers protective effects

The ozone layer absorbs most of the suns radiation but not all

The Layers of Earth's Atmosphere

Earth's Atmosphere diagram

  • Earth's atmosphere consists of layers of gasses - mostly Nitrogen and Oxygen.
  • Gravity holds these layers in place.
  • The atmosphere keeps the Earth warm and reflects harmul radiation waves.

Waves and Energy

Waves and Energy

  • Energy such as light and heat travels in waves
  • Humans can only see a small range of wavelengths called the visible spectrum.
  • Without energy life on Earth is impossible.
  • Shorter wavelengths have more energy.
  • The sun emits energy (solar radiation) in the form of wavelengths
  • This energy warms the Earth and provides energy for photosynthesis
  • The atmosphere reflects some solar radiation but also traps energy to keep our planet warm
  • The atmosphere absorbs certain wavelengths including some that are harmful to life

In 1678, Dutch physicist Christiaan Huygens proposed the Huygens Principle - that light was made up oif vibrating waves.

DNA

DNA and Atmosphere

  • DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is the building block of life and stores biological information.
  • DNA consist of helical chains polynucleotides bound by a sugar phosphate "backbone."
  • Mutations in DNA can cause serious problems such as cancer.
  • Our DNA is damaged by UV waves created by the sun.
  • The Ozone Hole allows UV waves to reach our planet's surface and destroy our DNA
  • Around 90 percent of nonmelanoma skin cancer is from UV rays.
  • Scientists predict that the Ozone Hole will cause more skin cancer.

A diagram of DNA

My Great Uncle Gerald Wolf died from skin cancer caused by UV rays

When UV waves hit your DNA it is damaged.

Watson and Crick discovered DNA.
