Hannah Messer, Christianna Brewer, and Greg Browning

Introduction

This is a presentation produced by, Hannah Messer, Christianna Brewer, and Greg Browning. In this presentation we will present to you the rhetorical strategies used in Patrick Henry's speech, "Give me liberty or give me death." and how these strategies effected the way people felt during this time.

Intro

Thesis

Patrick Henry had used ethos, logos, and pathos during his speech and here is something that was said during it, "I am willing to know the whole truth;to know the worst and to provide for it"(82).

He wants to "know the worst" and find all of the problems they are facing with Great Britain because that is the only way they will be able to fix any of the problems or come to the realization that they will be better off as a independent country.

Explanation on how and why rhetorical strategies were used

Explanation

Rhetorical strategies were used in Patrick Henry's speech to try and persuade the Virginia legislators that Virginia should join the War of Independence.

Patrick Henry would use these rhetorical strategies whenever he would bring up freedom and Independence.

Patrick Henry was in hope that they would fall for it sooner or later and so this is why it was used.

Author's Purpose

Patrick Henry's main goal in his Speech to the Virginia Convention is to convince the colonists to fight against Britain in order to get their Independence in another words gain.

Authors Purpose

Ethos Evidence 1/Explanation

Ethos

"Sir, we are not weak, if we make a proper use of the means which the God of nature hath placed in our power."

In the evidence you can tell that he was using a powerful figure to figure the process and get war by saying that God is backing us up.

Evidence 2/Explanation

Evidence

"...but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!"

This shows his own beliefs which means he wants to stand up for his country and people, then die without freedom

Evidence

Pathos

"Sir,we are not weak if we make a proper use of those means which the god of nature hath placed in our power. The millions of people armed in the holy cause of liberty and in such a country as that which we possess are invincible by any force which our enemy can send against us Besides sir, we shall not fight our battle alone."

Explanation

Explanation

When using pathos Patrick had convinced all the people listening that they feel that way as well as sways hem over the side, he did not want to go to battle simply for the joy of bloodshed, but to give the people what they need.

Logos Evidence

Logos

Quote 1, "Has Great Britain any enemy, in this quarter of this world , to call for all this accumulation of navies and armies? No, sir, she has none."

Quote 2, "We have held the subject up in every light of which it is capable, but it has all been in vein."

Explanation for Logos Quotes

Explanation

In quote 1, Henry is saying that Britain does not have any enemies, so there is no reason to call for war. This is logos because it can be proven a fact during this time period.

In quote 2, Henry is convincing the delegates that they have done all they can without going to war. This is logos because he is stating his logic to persuade the delegates to understand why they need to go to war.

Conclusion

Conclusion

Patrick Henry discusses how it is the time to stand up for their rights and retaliate against Great Britain. He persuades the audience that it is important to gain their Independence in such a time of slavery.
