- The main characters are Winnie, Mae, Jesse and Miles
- The wood in Treegap is owned by the Fosters.
- A stranger appears at the Foster's gate.
- The Foster's had a ten year-old daughter named Winifred.
- Winnie tells a toad that she wants to run away
- Mae Tuck sees her two boys every ten years
Rising Action
- Winnie runs away from home and finds Jesse Tuck drinking from a spring in the Wood
- Jesse won't let Winnie drink from the spring
- Jesse and his family kidnap Winnie
- The Tucks tell Winnie that the spring gave them eternal life
- The stranger overhears the story
- The Tucks bring Winnie home while the stranger tells the Fosters he knows where their daughter is
- The stranger gets the constable, then goes ahead of him to the Tucks'
- Mae Tuck murders the stranger to protect Winnie
- The constable returns Winnie home and locks Mae up in Jail
Climax
- Jesse gives Winnie a bottle of spring water to drink when she turns 17
- Mae Tuck is set to be executed for murder, but can not die
- The Tucks come up with a plan to break Mae out of jail
- In the middle of the night, Miles removes the window, Mae escapes the jailhouse, and Winnie takes her place for the night to let the Tucks get away
Falling Action
- The constable finds Winnie in the jailhouse
- Winnie's family locks her up in the yard
- The other children are impressed with Winnie for what she did

Conclusion
- Winnie sees a toad in danger from a dog and rescues it
- Winnie gets the spring water Jesse bottled for her and pours it on the toad
- 70 years later, Mae and Tuck return to Treegap
- Tuck finds a cemetery and discovers Winnie died two years earlier
- Mae and Tuck see Winnie's toad sitting in the middle of the road
