8 Geographical Regions

Geography- A science that deals with the natural features of the earth and the climate, products, and inhabitants.

WHAT IS GEOGRAPHY

What is a Region and why do you think they are important?

Does anyone know what we call the occupation

that draws maps?

First off, what is a map?

NO NEED TO WRITE

THESE DOWN YET...

1.) Title

2.) Compass

3.) Symbols

4.) Legend or Key

5.) Scale

6.) Grid

So there are 6 parts of a map

Let's do some

mapping

9450 Atlee Station Rd, Mechanicsville, VA 23116

Grid- The lines on a map that help you find an absolute or relative location.

Scale- Used to measure distances on a map. Converts distances on a map to real life distance.

LATITUDE and LONGITUDE

Legend/Key- The part of the map that explains what each symbol represents.

Maps

Symbols- The little drawings on a map that represent an object or place.

Compass- shows which way North, East, South, and West fall on the map.

Title- Tells you what the map is about.

Map- a drawing that can show

locations in a particular area

Coastal Plain - is located along the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. It is broad, low land. Providing many excellent harbors.

Equator- Zero degree latitude line that splits the earth into the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.

Latitude lines- are grid lines on a map that run east and west. Think of it as a "LATITUDE Ladder"

Longitude lines- are grid lines on a map that run north and south.

(can you think of a clever way to remember longitude?)

SO, can you name

each line?

Prime Meridian- Zero degree line of longitude that splits the earth into the Eastern and Western Hemispheres.

Let's look at a map

Hemisphere- Half of the globe. Earth is divided into 4 hemispheres: North, East, South, and West.

Appalachian Mountains/Highlands- are west of the Coastal Plain. They go from Eastern Canada to Alabama. They are an old, eroded mountain range in North America.

Region- is an area of land with common terrain and features. The US is divided into 8 geographic regions.

Canadian Shield- It is in Canada. It is a “horseshoe” of rocky land that wraps around the Hudson Bay. Consists of hills worn by erosion and hundreds of lakes carved by glaciers.

Great Plains are west of the Interior Lowlands and east of the Rocky Mountains. The region is flat, but the elevation increases as you get closer to the Rocky Mountains. This means that the land is higher above sea level. The Great Plains have a lot of dry, grassy land. This is called grassland.

Click on the 1393 E 59th Rd TAB

This will take you to Morrisville, Missouri and show your in a grassy valley, surrounded by great potential farmland.

Interior Lowlands are west of the Appalachian Mountains and east of the the Great Plains. The land is rolling (gentle hills) or flat. This region is a great place for farms and has rivers, valleys, and grassy hills.

Basin and Range region is the land between the Rocky Mountains and the Coastal Ranges. Has varying elevations; some of the land is high above sea level, and some of it dips down like a bowl. This region contains both isolated mountain ranges and Death Valley (which is the lowest point in North America)

Click on the Inyo County Tab

This will take you to the middle of DEATH VALLEY national park in southwest California. This is the Hottest place in North America!

Rocky Mountains are west of the Great Plains and east of the Basin and Range. They start in Alaska, continue through the mainland of the United States, and end in Mexico. They are rugged mountains with high, jagged peaks. They also contain the Continental Divide.

Coastal Ranges- These mountains run along the Pacific coast from California to Canada. Two coastal ranges are the Sierra Nevada and the Cascades. The mountains are rugged and tough but the valleys have fertile land where crops grow.

Click on the Los Angeles Tab

This will take you up into a helicopter, high above the Pacific coast. You can really see the elevation changes and the fertile lands that are all within the Coastal Range!
