By Charles Mungoshi
The Setting Sun and the Rolling World is a short story by Charles Mungoshi about a young boy leaving home to explore the world. A farmer Musoni does not want his son to leave. But Nhamo wants to go find a better life. Musoni thinks he is to young and he is not ready for the world and the danger it comes with.
One theme was sacrifice can lead to better things. This applies to how the son was very exploratory. The Son wanted to explore and though it meant leaving his home he knew if he stayed, his life would have stayed controlled. He would live the same, sorry life his Father had to go through. He points this out in paragraph 14 when the text states "The land is overworked, and gives nothing now father."
The other theme applies to the Father's side of the story. The father was a dedicated farmer. He worked and believed the farm was the only way of survival. He wanted his son to replace him on the farm. He thought the world was too dangerous. So we can assume that the theme was change only leads to danger. This is supported in paragraph 10, "...he knew of worse animals of prey, animals that wore redder claws than the lion’s"
The main conflict of the story is a man vs. man conflict. This conflict was between Musoni and Nhamo as they were discussing their different ideas. Musoni's ideas were that his son should stay home where it is safe. Nhamo's idea was that he should explore the world. One of Nahmo's reasons in paragraph 14 were “The land is overworked and gives nothing now, father. And the family is almost broken up”.
The father went against him for many different reasons . One of these reasons was stated in paragraph 10 "he knew of worse animals of prey, animals that wore redder claws than the lion’s, beasts that would not leave an unprotected homeless boy alone". Another thing stated to his son was "...nothing is more certain to hold you together than the land and a home, a family". All of these show the father wants his son to stay on the farm. These ideas go against the son's idea of exploring the world this is what causes a man vs. man conflict
Nhamo- Nhamo plans to leave his father Old Musoni and their family’s farm to find work in the city. He wants to explore the world and do new things other than stay at home. His charactar traits are determined and pashionate.
Musoni- Musoni is Nhamos father, he is scared of his son leaving home and doesnt want his son to go out in the dangerous world. His characted traits are worried and caring.
The Setting Sun & Rolling World is set in 3rd person with 2 characters, Nhamo and Musino both of them have different point of views but are similar in a sense that the story is told but someone else and not them. Musion belives his son Nhamo should not go out into the "real world" because its dangerous but Nhamo belives it could be good for him to explore and see more than the farm.
The title realates to the text because its what we are descussing/presenting about. It includes the title of the story and the author that wrote it
