College athletes go through so much mentally that goes unlooked. Student-athletes often face unique challenges related to balancing the demands of academic and athletic responsibilities, managing injuries, and dealing with the pressure to perform at a high level.

Mental health concerns among student-athletes can include anxiety, depression, stress, and burnout. These issues can arise from a variety of factors, including injury, academic pressures, social isolation, and the demands of competition.

Mya Schander wants to open up about the darkness of mental health for athletes. She hopes to spread awarness as well from her expirence with menatl health.

"In fall 2021, 24% of male and 36% of female athletes “felt so depressed that it was difficult to function,” according to an annual survey from the NCAA. Unfortunately, athletes fear losing scholarships, playing time or even their degrees should they take a mental health leave or suffer an injury." From the article Highereddive.com

Tony Diallo, a former college lacrosse player. He shares how he suffered from anxiety in highschool but didn't start thinking about his mental health deeply until coming to college. He explained how he felt saying that, “I felt like I was the only one. I felt like my teammates weren’t going through things like that so I kept it to myself.” Also, This Is My Brave talks of a mother of 3 who lost her oldest son to sucide . Gallagher wants to help in order to prevent suicide from happening to other children. The article The Retriever talks about multiple expierences that athletes and parents have went through with mental health.

There are multiple ways in which a colleges and univeristes can help athletes with their mental health. Here are some ideas:

Be a supportive listner

Coaches can work closely with mental health professionals to support their athletes' mental health. This may involve collaborating with counselors or therapists to develop individualized treatment plans or providing referrals for more specialized mental health care.

Educate Yourself

Coaches can create a positive and supportive team culture that values mental health and well-being. This can involve promoting open communication, providing opportunities for team-building and social support, and prioritizing self-care and rest.

When a college athlete opens up to you about their mental health concerns, listen without judgment and offer empathy and support. Let them know that you are there for them and that they are not alone.

Learn about the unique challenges that student athletes face and how these challenges can impact their mental health. This way as a coach, parent, and trainer you can be more supportive.
