The Happy Prince
Characters
The Swallow
The fairytale starts with the description of happy prince, which was standing high above the city. He was covered over with thin gold leaves; he had two sapphires instead of eyes and a large ruby on his sword.
One day there was a little swallow was migrating to Egypt. After a whole day of flying, it began to be dark. Then he saw the statue of The Prince and settled in between his feet, but as it was about to sleep, a large drop of water fell on it. At first, the swallow thought that it was raining and then he noticed that the statue of the Prince is crying. The little Swallow couldn’t quite figure out why The Happy Prince was sad and he explained to him that he did not know about tears when he was alive as he lived in a palace. The Prince then tells that there is a poor seamstress embroidering flowers on a satin dress while she had a sick boy and she had nothing to give to him other than river water. The prince asked the swallow to take the ruby from his sword to the poor tailor. The swallow agrees and stay the night with the prince. The next night the swallow wanted to go to Egypt, but the Prince insisted it to not go and asked it to give one of his sapphire eyes to the young man in a garret as he has to finish the play for the director of the theatre, but he is too cold to write. The swallow agreed and stayed for the night. The next day, the swallow said to the prince that he was going to Egypt, but the Prince again insisted the swallow to not go and asked to take the other sapphire eye to the poor girl crying as she has let her matchsticks fall in the gutter and her father will shout at her. But this time the swallow resisted because the prince will become blind, but the prince insisted it to take the gem and give it to the poor girl. The swallow agreed and gave to the poor girl. Then the swallow came back to the prince told to him that it will stay with him as his messenger because the prince has gone blind even though it is getting colder. The Prince asked him to fly over the town and tell him what he will see. After he came back, he told him that he saw a lot of poverty. The Prince told him to take a leaf of gold from his body and carry it to the poor and the swallow agreed. The Prince looked lifeless and gray and the Swallow died because of the cold. Since the statue lost its beauty. The common people melted the statue, but his lead heart did not melt. So, they threw the lead heart with the dead swallow. God told the angel to bring him two precious things from the city and the angel brought him the heart and the dead bird. God told him that he did well and that the bird will sing while the Prince will be celebrating him.
