Why did the Greeks come to Australia and how did they contribute to the unique diversity of Australia?

Why did the Greeks come to Australia?

In the time frame of 1949 - 2000 especially, the main reason Greeks migrated to Australia was because of the Greek civil war that started only months after the Nazi (German) occupation over Greece ended in 1944. There were other reasons they migrated as well such as, bad government and economy, loss of money and no more jobs. All these factors build up to many Greeks coming to Australia so that now Melbourne is the place with the third largest number of Greek speakers. From 1946 and on, the Greeks came to Australia because of the greek civil war. 93% of these people were Christians. 50 000 people died during the Civil war while 500 000 were left homeless. So, they came to Australia to support the basic needs that they had lost. Many people had also lost their lives fighting during the war. After World War II and during the civil war in Greece that followed, over 160,000 Greeks came to Australia

What caused the greek civil war?

What caused the greek civil war?

While the rest of Europe were recovering from World War 2, the greeks had just begun with new problems. The greek civil war started when two guerrilla forces were fighting off the Nazi. The forces were the communist EAM-ELAS and the EDES which had to be brought together to form one government. But the government pretty much disintegrated when the communists refused to disband their force. The Civil War broke out in Athens and the British military finally managed to suppress after EAM-ELAS had overrun almost all of Greece.

The communists finally accepted defeat and royalists held a vote, but the communists abstained from voting which resulted in the king returning to his throne. But during 1946, the communists started a new war. Britain gave up defending the Greeks and passed it on to the U.S.. The second communist rebellion lasted until 1949 when the U.S. supplied the Greek army and cleared the communist rebels. Most of the communists fled to Albania. But the War left a lasting effect on all Greeks.

How did they impact Australia?

How did they impact Australia?

Since Greeks came to Australia, they have given so much to this very multicultural country. They have given a type of Christian, Greek Orthodox, which added to the diversity and uniqueness of Australia, and they have given delicious food like galaktoboureko and souvlaki. Greeks also opened lots of milk bars and fish and chips shops to earn money. They have also brought a new holiday to Australia, the Greek Easter, which Greeks celebrate by coming to church, and making red boiled eggs.

They also started schools for kids with Greek heritage in Australia to learn greek as a second language. This added to Australia’s bilingual population.

They left a big impact because they gave more workers to Australian factories because they were desperate for a new life with well paid jobs. They, with a lot of other immigrants with different cultures, helped shape Australia’s economies.

What Challenges Did They Face?

What did they do when they got here?

The Greeks opened milk bars and fish and chips stores to earn a living and tried to learn the language. It was hard for them, because they had to learn English to serve their customers. It was hard for the school children who often got the cane for not knowing English. Teachers often didn’t have the patience to teach them a new language, so it sometimes got difficult. They also started corner stores with a variety of different things that they sold to make a living. They were often bullied and called names like wog, greaseball, Dago, Chocko

Why Melbourne??

Greeks came especially to Melbourne because at that time, because it had a lot of jobs which was the main reason they immigrated. Melbourne at that time, was the perfect place.

An Anonymous Story

A Story

My father was 24 years of age when he left Greece to come to Australia. My father came to Australia because he fell in love with my mother. My dad flew to Australia. The journey to Australia was pleasant and sad. Pleasant because he was going to see my mum, and sad because he was leaving his family.

When my father first arrived in Australia he was greeted by my mother at the airport. My mother took him to Brighton Beach for coffee at a cafe where my father said that Sydney was nice and clean.

My dad lived at his mother and father-in-laws home to be.

My dad’s thoughts of Australia haven’t changed. It was very hard to learn English in Australia. He did correspondence for 1 year. After that he went to night school for another year.

The farms in Australia are very similar to the farms in Greece. The city life in Sydney is very similar to the city life in Greece.

My dad now considers Australia to be his home although we have been to Greece twice.
