Tinuruan Tayong Magpigil at Maghintay

Tinuturuan tayong magpigil at maghintay

Mahigpit man ang pangangailangan, Adre.

Tinuturuan pa nga tayo ng dasal

At asal na kapuri-puri ng mga taong disente.

Masarap namang isiping tayo'y sibilisado

Kahit sa paggamit lang ng kaliwa't kanan;

Masarap ding marinig na kahit paano'y

May magandang bunga ang pawisng magulang.

Ngunit anong magandang nunal sa ating batok

Ang nananaig pagdidilim ng paningin

O nag-uudyok pumasok sa landasng alikabok?

Ngayon nga, tinuruan man tayong magpigil,

Dahil waring puputok na ang ating pantog

Ay parang asong humaharap tayo sa pader.

Poem by

Virgilio Almario

We are

Taught to Hold Back and Wait

English Version

We are taught to hold back and wait,

How ever intense the need,

We are even taught the prayers

And manners of people of decency.

Of course it's nice to think we're civilized,

Even in the use of the right hand and the left;

And it's nice to hear that at the very least

We're able to repay what our parents invested in us.

But what old Cain's mark on our nape

Rules when vision blurs in anger

Or lures us to the way of all flesh?

Now, learned though we might be in holding back,

Just the bladder about to burst drives us

To face a wall, pissing like dogs.

What is the poem all about?

The poem is all about the characteristics of a person who knows how to wait and hold back. We experience so much challenges as we grow up, and as time goes by, we learned that everything happens at the right time. As much as we wanted to have or to get something, if it's not the right time to have or get it, we should know how to hold back and wait for it. The poem is about being patient and understanding for the right time in everything.

Who is the speaker in this poem? What kind of person is he or she?

The speaker in this poem is the one who wants to give a message to everyone that we don't need to rush everything. Someone who wants to spread a knowledge about being patient and being controlled when it comes to holding back something or something we felt.

The speaker is talking to someone who needs to be reminded that anything that is worth having is worth waiting for. The speaker is talking to someone who wants to rush things and who wants rapid results, they shouldn't rush things because best things are too long to achieve and receive.

To whom is the speaker speaking to?

The purpose of the poem is to share the lesson that someone knows how to wait and hold back, he just need to apply it to himself. It somehow allow everyone to realize that if something is meant to happen, it will happen, despite of the circumstances and challenges that you'll face. It also helps us to see ourselves if we improved and can control ourselves, especially our feelings and thoughts.

What is the purpose of the poem?

State the poem’s central idea or theme in a singular sentence.

Best gifts come to people who knows how to wait and things we deserve will eventually come in the right time, just hold on and wait for that time to arrive and happen.

The tone of the poem is like someone who is lecturing somebody to know and learn the importance of waiting and holding back. The speaker even used figures of speech like "to face a wall, pissing like dogs", and other scenarios that can be compared to what he wanted to deliver.
