What is Neuroplasticity?

And how does it work?

Neuroplasticity:

Neuroplasticity:

  • According to MedicineNet.com neuroplasticity is "The brain's ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections throughout life."
  • In other words neuroplasticity is the ability to form connections in response to learning or through new experiences.

How Does it Work?

  • Imagine that our brain is a map.
  • The roads most traveled are our habits; everytime we do something in a specific way the road strengthens.
  • Neuroplasticity is when you decide to take the road less traveled and strengthen a different route.

What are neurons?

And how do they change over time?

Neurons:

Neurons:

  • The neuron is the basic working unit of the brain.
  • They are a specialized cell designed to send information to other nerve, muscle, or gland cells.
  • Neurons are cells within the nervous system.

How do they change over time?

How do they change over time?

  • Neurons, unlike other cells, do not replicate nor die
  • Once we do something the same way multiple times, that path becomes stronger
  • In order to make them change we have to break out of our old habits

How do we know this?

  • Because every time we experience something new or learn a new fact, it is scientifically proven the brain slightly re-wires its physical structure.

What is a Growth mindset?

Growth Mindset:

Growth Mindset:

  • According to Carol Dweck, a growth mindset is a self-perception that people hold about themselves.
  • The theory simply states that people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work.
  • Dweck also added, this philosophy creates a love of learning and a resilience that is needed for great achievements.

Ex #1:

  • When you make a mistake on a test and you have a growth mindset you are likely to continue to work harder in the are that you missed in order to strengthen your brain.

Ex #2

  • If you are not putting any effort into their class but are passing then you would probably have a low growth mindset because you wouldn't be encouraged to try your hardest, you would just take the easy way out

Ex #3:

  • If you still don't understand a math problem even when you've already asked the teacher, your growth mindset would insist on finding new solutions to help understand the problem.

Ex #4:

  • After putting a lot of effort into practicing for a math test but still failing, your growth mindset would encourage you to know that you tried you best and continue to do so.
