Chapter Summary

#1

The borders have just been reopened, so Marji’s parents go to get passports. Marji’s parents take a trip together to Turkey, leaving Marji at home. Marji provides her parents with a list of items she wants them to bring her back from Turkey: “A denim jacket, chocolate..two posters” (Satrapi 126). Marji’s parents gather these items for her in Turkey but have to get creative in order to get them back into Iran--Marji’s mom sews the two posters into the lining of her husband’s coat.

#2

When they return home, Marji gratefully accepts her gifts and decides to put them on and go buy tapes. While in town, Marji collects a Kim Wilde tape and a Camel tape. However, some women from the Guardians of the Revolution arrive and begin to harass Marji. Marji tries to defend herself saying that the Nike shoes are for basketball and the Michael Jackson button is “Malcolm X, the leader of black Muslims in America” (Satrapi 133). Unfortunately, Marji is unsuccessful and they take her back to the Committee. Once there, Marji is able to gain sympathy and they release her to go home.

Political Issue or New Idea/Concept

3

This chapter highlights the political issue of the Guardians of the Revolution. The Guard was extremely strict under the Islamic rule and was constantly critiquing what the women were wearing. Marji is chastised for wearing a pair of Nike tennis shoes and skinny jeans. The women from the Guard call Marji’s shoes “punk” (Satrapi 133). This is because they see it as defying the Islamic traditions. The women also call Marji a “whore” for not having her scarf low enough (Satrapi 133). This shows how strictly they followed the Islamic rule and how they especially wanted women to be completely modest without even a strand of hair showing. The chapter also shows how limitless the Guard was because once they took Marji to the Committee they could do anything to her without her parents even knowing.

Social Issue or New Character

4

#1

A social issue presented is the disconncect between Islamic culture and Western culture. Marji has on a Michael Jackson button that her parents brought her back from Turkey. While she’s out in town buying tapes, she has an encounter with some women from the Guardians of the Revolution. The women do not approve of how Marji is dressed. The women call Marji’s button a “symbol of decadence” (Satrapi 133). Marji attempts to cover it up saying it was “Malcolm X, the leader of black Muslims in America” (Satrapi 133). However, Marji is unsuccessful and they still take her in. This shows how doing anything that was not seen as being socially acceptable by the Guard was highly dangerous and Marji took a risk by wearing these clothes in public because the Guard saw them as her turning her back on Islam and accepting Western culture.

Graphic Element Analysis

#1

All of the panels within chapter 17 are traditional rectangles and there are no bleeds. The majority of the backgrounds are white. However, when Marjane’s parents are trying to figure out how to sneak Marji’s posters back into Iran, the background is black which reflects a serious tone because there would have been major consequences had they been caught with the posters. The emanata featured in the first panel on page 130 portrays Marji’s excitement when she receives her gifts. This delightful mood contrasts from the emanata on page 134 in panels three and four. The tears show the absolute fear Marji feels while at the Committee. This emphasizes how the Guard could have done anything to Marji but fortunately let her go. The panels featuring the women from the Guard also have a heavy graphic weight. Panel three on page 133 shows a major contrast between the women and Marji. Marji is portrayed as being completely vulnerale to the towering women above her. Marjane’s hands and body language also help to portray her as being scared of what might happen. The emanata in panel seven of page 133 also shows how aggressively the Guard pulled Marji’s scarf down because they were displeased with how she was wearing it. Page 134 features action-to-action transitions within the first four panels because it’s essentially the same panel except Marji’s facial expressions progress throughout the four panels into being more upset with the Guard.
