2 AREAS
neritic- water over continental shelf
oceanic- water over the rest of the ocean
Epipelagic Zone- The area of the water that column that extends from the surface down to about 650 feet.
Shallowest zone, but crowded with the most creatures out of all of the Zones.
- The zone has no bottom surface- unused matter sinks to lower zones, food for other creatures
- Nutrients for plants (sunlight penetrates all of this area)
- All food is self-produced (primary producers = so productive, support other organisms in other zones
Vision is an important KEY in the vast zone (used for hunting)
ex. Squids, fishes, marine mammals
lateral line- senses movement and helps with predators or schooling
Helps the marine life survive:
If viewed from above they blend well with darker depths, viewed from below they blend with lighter, sunlight surface
camouflage with surroundings to not be seen at all
Mucus helps lubricate fishes skin to better slide through the water
Myoglobin provides additional oxygen, warm inside temperature
Diving- "myoglobin is found in muscle and has both a higher affinity for oxygen than hemoglobin and is less affected by acidity. The acidity of muscles increases when diving for long periods"
