Cuba's 30 Years in Isolation

By Agneshka Rohra

Introduction

History

So I interpreted the given topic a bit more adventurously and less literally. I'll be talking about the economic isolation of a country, Cuba from the 1960s to the 1990s

History

In 1899, the United States first took over the Cuban government and maintained some form of control over them until the 1960's with quite some up and downs inbetween.

1960 - First Trade Ban

1961 - Broke Diplomatic Relations and left office

Most engineers had left to the US and shortages of products was getting worse with time

Innovation

"So Cubans learned to make do. When something breaks, they patch it up. When something does not work, they fix it. And when something is altogether lost, they invent it."

Technological Disobedience

The common Cuban home had to be creative in order to survive. They would completely rethink the function and purpose of a product and combine them to create something entirely new

People searched the cities for plastic objects and other materials. They'd check dumpsters and then grind the materials they found and then inject them into molds to make toys, electrical switches, footwear and more. They'd also dissect industrial products to retrieve spare parts.

Inventions

Here are some unique ways people came up with to use their resources.

Inventions

- Lamps and candles

Made from glass jars and toothpaste tubes

- Charger for nonrechargeable hearing aid batteries

Household and Personal Items

- Rikimbili

It is a bicycle with a motor attached to it and has a soda bottle as a fuel tank

- El Camello

A re-purposed semi truck serving as a public bus

Transport

- Television Antennaes

Using standardised meal trays

- Children's toys

Using empty glue bottles and plastic bottle caps

Entertainment

- Engine starting device

A large weight is hoisted up and dropped to spin a flywheel to start motors around the farm

- Interactive screen

A small mounted laptop connected to the truck's system

- Electric engine from a washing machine repurposed as a coconut shredder, key duplicator, a grinding wheel and a shoe repair tool
