De La Salle began his trip to visit the communities in the South of France. On March 31, while visiting the second time, he received a legal judgment against him from Paris. Thus, he will stay away from Paris for years. He visited Marseilles on June 1, and got involved in several schools, tried to go to Rome (but failed), encountered Jansenist opposition, and felt as if he failed in his endeavors there. He was 59.

At the age of 66, the 2nd General Assembly began with 16 Directors representing 102 Brothers. De La Salle is asked to take the discussion results and craft a new rule.

Three weeks before De La Salle's 68th birthday, he passed away at 4:00 am on Good Friday. Brother Barthelemy who was with him, suggested that he should offer up his sufferings, De La Salle replied : "Yes, I adore God guiding me in all events of my life."
