SPRAIN

Pablo Barrio & Gema González

WHAT IS AN ANKLE SPRAIN

A sprained ankle is an injury that occurs when you roll, twist or turn your ankle and the ligaments that help to stabilize the joint are forced beyond their normal range of motion.

Most sprained ankles involve injuries to the ligaments on the outside of the ankle

what is an ankle sprain?

GRADE I

GRADE I

Stretching or slight tearing of the ligament with mild tenderness, swelling and stiffness. The ankle feels stable and it´s possible to walk with minimal pain.

GRADE II

GRADE II

A more severe sprain, but incomplete tear with moderate pain, swelling and bruising. Although it feels somewhat stable, the damaged areas are tender to the touch and walking is painful.

GRADE III

GRADE III

This is a complete tear of the affected ligament(s) with severe swelling and bruising. The ankle is unstable and walking is not possible because the ankle gives out and there is intense pain.

TREATMENT

TREATMENT

FIRST WEEK

FIRST WEEK

Complementing the RICE method we will use manual therapy and small electric shocks that will help to improve circulation, at the end of the session we perform a compressive bandage to prevent movement of the ankle

GRADE II

SECOND

WEEK

We can see how the hematoma has disappeard, the pain is not so intense and the patient can walk without the help of crutches. We will continue to use the same treatment we chose last week.

This week we start with some simple exercises to improve stability and strength. We can see that recovery is very favorable so we recommend the patient start with the sport but with great care.

THIRD WEEK

THIRD WEEK

During the exercises the patient will wear a bandage that will help in order to hold the joint, when she overcome these exercises we will go removing bandage so that she can controls her joint. By the end of this week, the patient will be ready to play the match, but the patient still has to exercise so that the ankle doesn’t sprain again.

This week the patient tells us that she has been able to practice her sport without any kind of malice, we continue to use the RICE method but this week we will use more physical exercises
