- They are a type of intercellular cell contact that form channels that mediate communication between two adjacent cells.
- They are located in the cardiac and smooth muscle cells and the central nervous system.
- They permit the passage of electrical signals that occur bidirectionally and without delay.
These channels are formed by the interaction of the cell contacts
Intercellular communication refers to the various ways and structures that biological cells use to communicate with each other directly or through their environment.
Intercellular communication is largely mediated by gap junctions.
Gap Junctions allow small molecules and electrical or chemical signals to pass directly into the cytoplasm of neighbouring cells. (permit direct cell to cell transfer)
Aids heart muscules or cardiac myocytes to contract in unison.
This occurs by passing the signal to contract from one cell to the neighboring cell via the gap junctions.
This signal comes in ions, which trigger the change in the electric potential of the membrane
