What is Painting?

Painting

A painting is an image (artwork) created using pigments (color) on a surface (ground) such as paper or canvas. The pigment may be in a wet form, such as paint, or a dry form, such as pastels.

The most basic skill in Painting is the ability to mix RAW COLORS to create a variety of new colors to fit the needs of your artwork.

Scale

Using the template you will receive, create a five value tint, tone, and shade scale using a color of your choice.

Make sure you carefully add black, white, and grey to your color to create a smooth transition of values.

The part of the paint that creates color is called PIGMENT. Pigment is mixed with binders and solvents to create a viscous fluid that can be applied to surfaces to make a painting.

Color can be manipulated in various way in order to be used to the artists' advantage. Combining two or more colors in this way is called MIXING.

A color wheel is a visual representation of colors arranged according to their chromatic relationship.

Paint in the shapes using hues, tints, and shades of each color.

Guidelines

Mandala Pattern must use at least 3 sections containing different shapes

Each shape will contain a tint, shade, and hue. They may not touch one another or butt up against one another. Distribute them evenly.

Take a large paper and find the center by measuring 6 inches from the top and the side. Draw a dot in the center.

Using the center dot, make a 5 and half inches from the center with a compass.

Now, take a slice template and trace it on sketch paper, cut it out.

Hold the small end of your slice and hold it on the center dot. Trace is all they way around the circle until you have 12 sections.

Draw your pattern on your slice. Trace in sharpie.

Flip it over and color entire back with a pencil.

Place slice on color wheel sections ride side up and use a pen or pencil to trace over outlines while pressing hard.

You will have a transfer of your pattern

Repeat on all 12 sections

In each section, decide which shape will be a hue, tint, or shade and label them.

Begin with yellow at the top section and work your way around the color wheel in order.
