According to the CDC, "about 5.7 million adults in the United States have heart failure."

Who does heart failure affect?

What is the body's response?

Goal: Increase Heart Rate and Increase Blood Flow

Alpha 1, Alpha 2, Beta 1, Beta 2

(Adrenergic)

SANS

Flight/Fight

M1, M2, M3

(Muscarinic)

PANS

Rest/Digest

SANS/PANS Receptors

Heart

Receptors

Work to increase heart rate and blood flow

Heart

Heart

Beta 1/Beta 2 activation increases heart rate and increases strength of contraction

M2 inhibition prevents the heart rate from decreasing

Vessels

Vessels

Alpha 1 activation increase venous tone and increase arterial resistance

Kidneys

Beta 1 activation increase reabsorption

Kidney

Increased heart rate and blood flow to go back to homeostasis!
