Who?

  • The Pygmy often referred to as the Batwa are a small tribal group located all throughout South and central Africa, Asia Australia (Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), )etc.
  • They are known for being short
  • Pygmy men and women on average grow up to 4ft
  • The Batwa is original name of the pygmy
  • The Pygmy have been in the area of the now DRC (the Democratic Republic of the Congo) ever since Europeans found the area and many have been moved over years.
  • The Pygmy tribes survive by hunting and gathering, and still, use stone-age technology.

  • There is that disagreement that has been going on ever since the Congo Civil War, which started in (1998-2003)
  • The cause of the disagreement was that the parties involved in the Congo War thought the Pygmies were "subhuman,"
  • The disagreement continues because there are minimum efforts in stopping the issue
  • The Pygmy were also affected by the Rwanda genocide
  • 10,000 killed estimated 10,000 injured

  • They are not permitted to become citizens in any of the Congo Basin countries. Are not given any for of ID because of this when asked for Identification cards , or issued passports.
  • Are often killed for not having a form of identifcation
  • Their land is not legally theirs. It is owned by the government, who takes away their essential resources by deforestation.
  • In the early 1900s many europeans would capture young children display them in zoos like animals until 1907
  • The Batu people would enslave pygmy people to work in colt mines children born into same fate

  • The Bantus, who, to this day, use the Pygmies enslave Pygmies
  • Uganda and the Congolese (the Decromatic Republic of the Congo) wanted to open up Pygmy lands for mineral exploitation
  • The Hutus killed many Pygmies because of their beliefs
  • "Les Effaceurs" ( the erasers )are group of average sized people who believe that because of there height they shouldn't exist ( to this day they still kill Pygmy)

  • The people affected by the genocide are the Batwa (pygmy). The genocide did not affect the population of the DRC but it did affect the population of the pygmies 1/3(30%) of pygmies have been severely affected

  • During the Rwandan Genocide in 1994, Hutu militias took over many Pygmy villages. Invaded the forests, where the Pygmies resided,
  • Other militias thought that by killing and eating the Pygmies, militias believe they would possess "magical powers"
  • Rebels believed that sleeping with a Pygmy woman can cure diseases such as a backache.

  • People are categorized by race, ethnicity, religion, etc.

  • Refers to a small and dwarfish person and/or a person who is unimportant

Propaganda is used to make a classification seem less than human (ex. animal, insect, disease, etc.)

  • Often taken advantage of because of there the lower class/underclass
  • Many of their homes have been ruined due to deforestation, conservation projects, and commercial activities

  • Can't defend their land and resources
  • Basic rights are not secured

  • Many looked for Pygmies' because of superstitious beliefs

  • Pygmy communities are hunted down in the forest and are chased by armed tribal fighters with guns

  • Some of the attackers are found in the forests with human organs on their weapons
  • some victims are found with missing sexual organs (became charms for their killers)

  • The perpetrators try to hide the dead bodies, they deny the existence of any crimes.

  • one was discovered near a town called Bunia in the Democratic Republic of Congo
  • 30 mutilated Pygmy bodies were found in it

  • The pygmies are still currently abused and murdered just at a slower rate because there are less of them now
  • .Only 250,000-260,000 pygmies remain alive in the forests of Central Africa to this day.
  • Many people in Africa still consider them an inferior race. Therefore, not many efforts have been made by Central African countries to protect them
  • After witnessing the act of cannibalism, the UN has tried to stop them but the DRC still has done nothing
