The Seas Ahead

What is a team / crew

A team is a group of people working together to achieve a shared / common goal.

Step 1 in a crew becoming a team is:

Agree a goal

When is an issue an issue?

Different personalities and different communication styles?

Getting along as a crew

Communication involves:

Listening and speaking: 2 ears, 1 mouth

communication skills

Types of Listening

There are SOOOO many types of listening and each has its strengths and advantages. the three here the most commonly referred to and possibly the most useful to master.

Autobiographical

Autobiographical: when you relate what you hear to your own life / experience.

Great for bonding and reflective learning

Terrible for supporting & empathising.

Mixed success in objective decision making

Empathic

Empathic listening involves listening to the emotions to really understand what the other person is going through.

Rogers (1952) defines it as "listening to an experiencing the other's reality as if it were your own, but without forgetting the 'as if'"

It is not 'sympathy' and should not elicit a personal story in response - in that instance, you have likely slipped into autobiographical listening -which can be quite a destructive and damaging mode to be in when supporting through an issue

Great for coaching / supporting someone

objective

Objective listening means taking your opinion and view point and personal preference out of the equation and listening with an open mind, able to see from all angles clearly.

good for: decision making, resolving conflict

communication process

Errors can slip into a message because:

1. what is said is not what was intended

2. what was said was not said clearly / loudly enough

3. what was heard was misheard

4. what was heard was misunderstood

So.

speak clearly, repeat yourself and check for understanding.

Listen well, and check understanding
