Where DO Fibres Come From ?
Fibre
Fibre
- Hair-like strand of material
- Extremely long in relation to its width
- Smallest visible unit of any textile product
- Fibers are spun into yarns and then woven into the best fabrics
- Divided as Natual and Synthetic fibres according to Sources
Natural fibers — Fibres directly obtained from:
- Plants - Bamboo, coconut trees, Flax seeds, Vegetable fiber, Cellulose
- Animals - Silk - Consist exclusively of proteins and the protective epidermal covering of animals
- Minerals - Asbetos- From inorganic compounds ; Fire and Acid resistant hence used for industrial purposes
Synthetic fiber
- Either entirely made up of chemicals or a mixture of chemical and natural fiber
- Different polymers are joined together by a chemical reaction to form fibers
Examples:
- Polyesters - Used in clothing, furnishing, and industrial use;
- Acrylics - Used to make hats, socks, jumpers;
- Nylon - Used to make raincoats, parachutes, stockings
Why is Natural Fibre better than Synthetic Fibre ?
- Biodegradable
- Greater strength because of Low Specific Weight
- Good electrical resistance
- Skin-friendly
- Production is efficient (low energy requirement, emits lesser Carbondioxide)
- Cost effective
- Good thermal and insulating properties
