Artists Needed!

Driving Quetsion

How can we use poetry and visual art to symbolize the “nature for science” for the Artesia Art Guild’s “Annual Art & Science Show” for the public?

Where to Begin

Know vs. Need To Know

What do we Know & Need to Know

Let's identify what we know and need to know to answer the driving question.

Work with your student team to fill in the chart together. You can always rewatch the video, if needed. Be prepared to share your discussion points with the class.

Remember your charts will change. As you learn about the nature of science this semester, you will be able to move items from the "Need to Know" to the "Know."

Student Friendly Objectives

Content Objectives

I can....

  • understand how science is comprehensive and consistent, as it serves to make the physical world understandable by man.
  • understand that the continuity and stability are characteristics of science and support confidence in scientific discoveries.
  • describe specific examples of how science is tentative.
  • relate new technology and a changing society to discoveries and changes in scientific knowledge.
  • judge the impact of science, society and technology on each other as positive or negative.
  • evaluate topics and ideas to determine whether science can answer the problems associated with these topics/ideas.
  • explain and make predictions using data and analysis from a scientific investigation.
  • identify strategies for avoiding bias in scientific investigations and reporting.
  • create an altered book to display the nature of science in poetry and visual art.
  • write an interpretation of the symbolism within my altered book.

I understand....

  • that science is experimental.
  • that science is limited to solving problems through the use of empirical evidence.
  • science is a blend of imagination and logic.
  • and realize scientists must recognize and avoid bias in their investigations.
  • the importance of scientific knowledge gained throughout history.
  • the importance of collaboration and publication of scientific work.

We can plan and implement an art show for the public to showcase the nature of science.

Throughout the first semester, you will be asked to reflect on your own learning and offer feedback to classmates to help in their own reflection process.

Good Reflection & Feedback Starts Here:

  • Make an honest effort to understand.
  • Collaborate with team members during labs and class activities.
  • Communicate in a clear, kind and respectful manner.
  • Celebrate Success & Learning!
  • Ask questions for your own understanding, but also to help others extend their learning.

Weekly Self & Peer Reflection Form

Work with a partner to reflect on your work and the work of others. Try to work with a new partner every week. Use these reflection times to support revision and modification to your altered book.
