Westphalia contains the castle of Baron Thunder-Ten-Tronckh. It is where Candide, the main character in the novel "Candide" by Voltaire, grew up. Within Westphalia, Candide was taught a philosophically optimistic view of life by the scholar Pangloss. Here, Candide and Cunegonde, the Baron's daughter, fell for one another which led to Candide's exile after being caught kissing Cunegonde. After being kicked out, Candide's journey began.

After leaving Westphalia, Candide stumbled upon the Bulgarians. There, he was made a soldier whom would fight for the Bulgarian army. He was whipped and broken into shape. While taking a walk one day, he was captured by more respected Bulgars and had the option of being whipped thirty six times by two thusand men each or being shot in the head twelve imes all at once. After being whipped two rounds, Candide begged the soldiers to shoot him. At this moment, the King of Bulgaria passed by and excused Candide's execution for he was a philosopher and saw the world with a different perspective. During war, Candide hid to survive. Afterwards, he walked over heaps of massacured bodies and left.

After escaping the Bulgarians, Candide came upon a village that belonged to the Abares. There had been a mass murder by the Bulgarians on Abare. Bodies that had once belonged to men, women, and children were scattered upon the ground.
In Holland, Candide is mistreated by a minister and his wife who end up dumping a bucket of feces on his head. An Anabaptist named James helped Candide by cleaning him up and providing him with food. Also in Holland, Candide found Pangloss who had gotten syphilis from Paquette. Pangloss told Candide that Westphalia was intruded by the Bulgarians and that Cunegonde along with her family were murdered.
While coming upon Lisbon by ship, James the Anabaptist died by trying to save another man's life. The ship foundered. Pangloss, Candide, and the man who hit the sailor James tried to save remained. While walking towards Lisbon, there was an earthquake which detroyed 3/4 of Lisbon. In Lisbon, Pangloss was hung for preaching his philosophical beliefs. Candide was whipped for listening. Later in Lisbon, Candide was led by an Old Woman to a lonely house in the country where she took care of him. She later led him to his love Cunegonde who had survived after being cut open by Bulgarians. Cunegonde told Candide her journey. Candide killed Don Issachar and the Grand Inquisitor who both wanted Cunegonde. Candide, Cunegonde, and the Old woman went to Sierra Morena.

After Candide killed the Jew and the Grand Inquisitor, Candide, Cunegonde, and the Old Woman rode on Audaulsian horses and started towards Cadiz. Along their jouney, they reached the small town of Avacena in the mountains of Sierra Morena. Cunegonde realized a Friar stole her jewels and riches.
In Cadiz, a fleet and troops were preparing to leave to fight the Jesuits of Paraguay who made a native tribe in San Sacrament to revolt against the Kings of Spain and Portugal. Candide, because of his past experience in the Bulgarian army, became a captain. He set sail with Cunegonde, the old woman, two valets, and the two Andalusian horses. During this voyage, they talked about Pangloss and the Old Woman's history.
When arriving upon Buenos Ayres, the governor took a deep interest in Miss Cunegonde. He admired her beauty and wanted to marry her. Cunegonde needed fifteen minutes to consider it. The Old Woman advised she married him for he was extremely wealthy. Candide was forced to flee for the murder of the Grand Inquisitor. Candide with his servant Cacambo parted ways with Cunegonde and the Old Woman.
In Paraguay, Candide and Cacambo were stopped by a guard who said the Commandant does not want to hear from a Spaniard. Cacambo told the guard that Candide was a German so the guard let them in. To Candide's suprise, the Commandant was Cunegonde's brother who had survived. The two shared their stories until Candide told the Commandant that he wanted to marry Cunegonde. Since Candide was poor, the Commandant got angry and striked Candide with his sword. Candide killed him in self defense and cried after.

After leaving Paraguay, Candide and Ca cambo wandered far beyond the barrier until they heard what sounded like the cry of women. Two women were being chased by monkeys biting at their behinds. Candide shot the monkeys, thinking this was a great way to make up for all of the killing he has done. Candide was wrong and Cacambo explained how the monkeys were the womens' lovers. Later, Cacambo and Candide were captured by Orellions who hated Jesuits. Cacambo told them they were the enemies of their enemies so the Orellions let them go. Candide and Cacambo continued their journey.

Candide and Cacambo decided to go to Cayenne where a French man could possibly help them. However, before finding Cayenne, the two came across a gold road which led them to El Dorado. El Dorado was a wealthy utopia with peace and prosperity. All religions were tolerated here and the government paid for much of the services. Despite all of these positivities, Candide and Cacambo decided to leave because Candide wanted to be with Cunegonde. They discussed this with the King who was suprised to see them leave such a perfect place. He gave Candide and his servant one hundred sheep dressed in diamonds, jewels, and rubies. Candide and Cacambo left for Cayenne.

Once Candide and Cacambo arrived, only two red sheep remained. They stumbled upon a negro whose arm and leg was amputated just out of tradition of being a slave. With this, Candide couldn't possibly believe in Pangloss' philosophy of this being the best of all possible worlds. Candide then sent of Cacambo to fetch Cunegonde who was supposedly in Byenos Ayres with the governor. Candide wanted to go to Venice and asked the skipper the price. After learning that Candide had tons of money, the skipper continuousy raised the price. Eventually, he stole Candie's sheep and robbed him of much of his money. Candide met the philosopher Martin on a French vessel going to Bordeaux. On the ride, Candide found one of his sheep in the water and that the skipper's ship sunk.

Candide and Martin stayed very briefly in Bordeaux. Here, Candide sold a few pebbles from El Dorado. He also gave away his sheep to the Bordeaux Academy of Sciences to study the reasoning for the red color of the sheep's wool.
In Paris, Candide met the Abbe who soon became what Candide thought was his friend. After talking about their stories and Paris, they found themseleves talking about Cunegonde. The Abbe asked if Candide had recieved any letters from Cunegonde but Candide had not. The next day Candide recieved a letter from supposingly Cunegonde but he was tricked. Candide was told that Cunegonde was sick and was sensitive to light. She could not talk either. Candide was brought into a dark room with a woman he was tricked into thinking was Cunegonde. Candide gave many of his riches from El Dorado to the woman but was then reported for suspicious behavior by the Abbe. The Abbe put Candide into jail. Candide bribed the guard into letting Candide go. Afterwards, Candide and Martin went to Dieppe where they would get transportation to England.

When Candide and Martin arrived at Portsmouth, England, Candide was disgusted by an execution of an Admiral that was going to happen. The Admiral had not killed enough men so he was to be executed. Candide asked to be taken to Venice.
In Venice, Candide waited for Cunegonde and Cacambo to show up. However, neither one of them did. Martin advised Candide to forget about Cacambo and Cunegonde for they both aquired great wealth and probably left Candide. In Venice, Candide met Paquette, Pangloss' old mistress, and Giroflee the Friar. Afterwards, Candide and Martin asked and were granted permission to go to the palace of the noble Signor Pococurante who greeted the foreigners. They talked about their stories while eating and drinking in the beautiful palace. The Pococurante had no pleasure in anything despite all that he had. Candide talked of Cunegonde and his valet Cacambo, wishing he could see them. Later. Candide an Martin ate supper at an inn with six strangers, all of who turned ou to be disposed kings. Cacambo was here also as a servant to one of the kings. Cacambo told Candide that Cunegonde was in Constantinople and offered to bring Candide and Martin to her. Theodore of Corsica was the poorest King and each of the others gave him twenty sequins. Candide gave a diamond worth atleast a hundred times more. The other Kings wondered about Candide's generosity.

On the journey to Constaninople, Cacambo described how he bought Cunegonde and the Old Woman. However a pirate stole them and sold them as slaves. Cunegonde had also grown very ugly but Candide still wanted her anyway. While coming upon Turkey, Candide found that Pangloss and Cunegonde's brother survived. Pangloss' execuatoner did not know what he was doing and Pangloss survived. When he was going to be burnt, rain stopped this plan. Pangloss was thought to be dead and so a surgeon bought him for experimentation but Pangloss woke up in the middle of the surgery. The surgeon stiched Pangloss back up and let him go. Pangloss travelled to Constantinople where he was arrested for slowly picking up a woman's nosegay. The Baron had survived Candide's stabbing since his wound healed. He was attacked by Spanish troops and sent to jail in Buenos Ayres. He was later caught with a Turkish man and was sent to the galleys. Candide later found Cunegonde and the Old woman and bought them along with a small farm where they would all live.

Candide, Cunegonde, the Old Woman, Martin, Cacambo, the Baron, Pangloss, Paquette, and Giroflee all lived on a small farm. Each had their own reason to complain. Cunégonde reminded Candide of their marriage. Despite being horrified by her ugliness, Candide agrees. The Baron was still angry and did not want to see his sister get married to someone lower in rank than her. Without Cunegonde knowing, the others sent the Baron back to the galleys where he would have no influence on the marriage. Cunegonde got more and more ugly. Cacambo worked on the farm though he hated this fate. Pangloss was unhappy since he could not be an inportant figure in a German university. Martin is patient with the situation because it is better than before. Pangloss tried to believe his philosophy but then he too could not believe that this was the best of all possible worlds. Paquette and Giroflee arrived, still unhappy and with Paquette still being Giroflee's prostitute.
