Objectification of Women in Othello

By: Millie and Mark

Desdemona

Desdemona

Othello mistreats Desdemona when:

  • He calls her names like public whore, strumpet, devil, and a commoner.
  • He claims that their home is a whorehouse
  • He physically abuses her
  • He acts like he owns her body as if she is nothing more than an object
  • He suffocates her

The Impact

The Impact

This affects Desdemona by making her sad and hopeless. She has these feelings because she truly loves Othello even though he doubts her and makes her feel like he never loved her back. She expresses these emotions when she says, "his unkindness may defeat my life" (4.2.159). This expresses her feelings because she demonstrates how she is slowly giving up on Othello.

The Lesson

The Lesson

No matter what you do, it is almost impossible to fix what was broken. Just like the flower, once the petals have been ripped off, the flower can not bloom again and all that is left is something that is dead.

Emilia

Throughout the play, we see that Iago uses Emilia. He uses her to steal the handkerchief. He also shows no love or sympathy to any of the women in the play. Iago's murder of Emilia demonstrates his hatred towards women.

When Emilia witnesses Othello's objectification of Desdemona, she develops a stronger hatred for men.

The Impact

Everytime Emilia sees an injustice whether that be between her and Iago or Othello and Desdemona, her view of the opposite sex becomes worse and harder to redeem. She expresses her anger when she says, "A halter pardon him! And hell gnaw his bones" (4.2.135).

The Lesson

Every rip in the paper demonstrates each injust act that a man commits in the play. Just like Emilia's trust, it is hard to repair the rips that tore her apart.

Compare and Contrast

Emilia and Desdemona both react to the objectification very differently. Emilia expresses her disappointment out of hatred and anger towards men. On the other hand, Desdemona takes a less aggressive approach to dealing with her problems.

Modern Day View of Women

To this day we see objectification of women. Many people sexualize women and look at them with pure lust or even hatred, without considering qualities other than looks. Often times women get praised or hated on soley based on their apperance.

Conclusion

Conclusion

To conclude the many times sexism and objectification of women that occurs during the play deeply affects the characters in the play. Both Desdemona, and Emilia are objectified by men who supposedly love them. In this play men believed that they are superior to women and that apparently gives them the right to treat women like nothing. But unfortunately, sexism and the objectification of women is still relevant today, and definitely affects many bright, and powerful women.
