Value (Shading) is the lightness or darkness of an element. It adds the illusion of depth, making things look 3D.
Contrast is how different two elements are. This can highlight one or the other and create visual interest.
1) Choose one of the inspiring artists (or find your own) and print out one image that uses Light and/or Dark in a unique or interesting way.
Paste the image into your sketchbook and answer the following questions, in complete sentences, in your sketchbook.
1. How is Light/Dark used in this image? (What is highlighted? What is in shadow?)
2. What do you think the artist was trying to convey? Did their use of light help?
Jot down broad topics/categories. Abstract vs Real? Nature vs Man Made?
2) Print and collage images into a page in your sketchbook.
Think about how you are going to create a portfolio piece of artwork that addresses the theme of Light/Dark.
The possibilities are endless....
Will you draw realistically using Pencil? Adding detailed shading and value?
Will you use contrast and abstract shapes to create an interesting composition with acrylic paint?
DRAW TWO DIFFERENT THUMBNAIL SKETCHES OF YOUR IDEAS IN YOUR SKETCHBOOK.
