EVOLUTION OF A TIGER

Carla Aynés, Anna Belenguer, Raúl Déniz

and David Cabrera

INTRODUCTION

-The existence of tigers goes back a little more than a couple of million years

-The oldest fossils of the species is Panthera zdanskyi.

- It is also believed that modern tigers come from the Miacid

Introduction

Panthera Zdanskyi

Panthera Zdanskyi

The species was found in the Chinese province of Gansu and is believed to have lived 2 million years ago during the Pleistocene era. This evidence suggests that Tigers and their descendants had their origin in this Asian country, and with time they acquired a greater size, induced by dietary adaptations.

Miacid

Miacid

It is believed that modern tigers all stem from the Miacid, an ancient carnivore that lived over 62 million years ago. Even though Miacids lived so long ago, the similarities between them and the modern tigers are uncanny. The four legs, patterned fur, and tail are all similarities between the two creatures.

Adaptation

Adaptation from Miacid to Modern Tiger and Panthera Zhandski tiger.

Adaptation

Miacid

Miacid to Modern Tiger

There was a huge difference between them.

Miacids--> -Had short legs

- Long claws

- Long and thin teeth

- Ate insects and meet

- No striped skin

-Not so big.

Modern Tigers--> - Increased hearing.

-Eyes adapatated

-Bigger legs.

- Striped skin.

-Long and thin teeth

- Eat only meet.

Panthera Zdanski

Panthera Zdanski

Modern Tigers--> - Increased hearing.

-Eyes adapatated

-Bigger legs.

- Striped skin.

-Long and thin teeth

- Eat only meet.

Panthera Zdanski/ Logdam tiger-->

-Similar head bones.

-Only ate meet.

-Similar to modern tigers.

-Good adaptated

-Strong

Environmental Changes

Environmental

Environment has lot to do with evolution. This are some changes that tigers have experienced due to evolution.

Changes

- Tigers started having extremely good hearing-> Infrasound

-Their striped coat. Acting as a camuflage.

-Modern tigers have a retina adaptation that helps them see in the dark. This helps them to hunt at night in the dark .

Changes

Evolution

-The pseudaelurus is the common ancestor of all the tiger species that are living nowadays.

-Direct ancestor of cats

-Since the beggining tigers had been carnivore

-Tigers became smaller as their prey became smaller

Natural Selection

-More straws

-Longer claws and hind legs

-More flexible

-Longer tails

Straws

-To better camuflate when they are on the prowl to hunt preys

Straws

Longer Claws and hind legs

-Longer claws to dig further into the prey

-Longer hind legs allows for a longer jumping distance

Claws and hind legs

Flexibility

-More flexibility to run faster in order to hunt better

Tails

-More balance

-Momentum

-Communication between them
