A Encounter With Jesus
This meeting wasn't an accident
This woman was not unintelligent
John 4:1-6
John 4:7-9
Jesus told her 3 things:
If you knew:
Are you greater than Jacob?
1. The Gift of God
2. Who I am
3. I would give you
living water
Where will the water come from?
John 4:10-12
10 Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”
11 The woman said to Him, “Sir, You have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. Where then do You get that living water? 12 Are You greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, as well as his sons and his livestock?”
John 4:13-15
Jesus tells her
She asks for salvation
He changes the subject
John 4;16-18
16 Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.
17 The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.”
Jesus said to her, “You have well said, ‘I have no husband,’ 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; in that you spoke truly.”
John 4:19-24
John 4:25-28
25 The woman said to Him, “I know that Messiah is coming” (who is called Christ). “When He comes, He will tell us all things.” 26 Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am He.”
John 4:27-42
25 The woman said to Him, “I know that Messiah is coming” (who is called Christ). “When He comes, He will tell us all things.” 26 Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am He.”
They met in verse 7.
He doesn't tell her who He was until verse 26
It meant more this way
2 Peter 1:3
as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue,
He didn't just come out and tell us.
She didn't understand what Jesus was talking about.
But she was not unintelligent
How could she understand:
It took time, conversation, and contemplation
You don't know everything
The more time, conversation, and contemplation we spend, the more we understand God
We have so many chances to talk to God
14 but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.” 15 The woman said to Him, “Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw.”16 Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.”
She asks for physical water
She was asking for salvation
Jesus tells her to call her husband
Did He change the subject?
Jesus points out the tings that keep her from achieving salvation
We all (continually) sin.
That sin separates you from God
No matter how small that sin is
If worship brings us closer, sin takes us farther away
19 The woman said to Him, “Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, and you Jews say that in Jerusalem is the place where one ought to worship.”
Sounds like our goal is perfection
42 Then they said to the woman, “Now we believe, not because of what you said, for we ourselves have heard Him and we know that this is indeed [a]the Christ, the Savior of the world.”
39 And many of the Samaritans of that city believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, “He told me all that I ever did.”
Are we so convicted that we make people question their own beliefs?
She took them to Jesus both physically and metaphorically.
We can only take them to the Bible
29 “Come, see a Man who told me all things that I ever did. Could this be the Christ?”
42 Then they said to the woman, “Now we believe, not because of what you said, for we ourselves have heard Him and we know that this is indeed [a]the Christ, the Savior of the world.”
1 Corinthians 3:6
6 I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.
