Taking a look at America!

Physical features

*Located in Northern Hemisphere

-48/50 located in the "lower 48" continental U.S.

-Hawaii and Alaska outliers

*Huge central plain in the middle of the country

-to the east are Appalachian mountains to the Atlantic Ocean.

-to the west are Rocky Mountains to the Pacific Ocean.

Much of U.S. is covered in a "temperate" climate, or "moderate" climate.

First settlements were located on the east coast because of fishing, logging, and trade industries.

-large plantations formed in the southern region to grow crops like cotton, tobacco, and sugar.

Growth in cities began to take shape and depending on how close natural resources were.

-Pittsburgh: Coal and Iron

-Rochester NY: Erie Canal

As expansion west took shape, America needed a way to transport goods easier. (Railroads, shipping)

-Cities, towns sprang up along these routes.

-Evansville located along centralized shipping routes.

As trade and more goods were expanded, migration began to take form west all the way to the Pacific!

-Migration: "process of moving from one place to another"

North America discovered by Europeans in around 1300-1400s.

-Colonization didn't begin until Mid-late 1500s!

Native Americans inhabited the land for far more years before!

-grew cops/hunters/nomads

-(depends on where they lived.

1st Settlements

1st Settlements

English, Spanish, Dutch, and French began to colonize the new land in the 1500s.

-English Kings hoped that North American land would provide more wealth for the crown.

-first settlement in Jamestown (1607)

-1620 Plymouth Mass.

-1733 all 13 colonies were settled.

-Spanish laid claims to land in the Caribbean and modern day Florida.

-France claimed land both north and west of the 13 colonies.

New Country

A new Country

Each colony had it's own government.

1754-1763 Britain beat France in the French/Indian war.

-claimed more territory and power in the colonies.

-A young George Washington fought FOR the British!

To pay for the war; Britain began to tax the colonies without representation. (colonists didn't have a say)

1774

-colonists sent representatives to the first continental congress to draw up ideas for a new independent country from Britain.

1776

-Colonist declared Independence and fought the revolution until victory in 1783!

1787

-great struggles in forming the new government.

-congress met for a long summer to establish the Constitution.

Expansion/Growth

Growth in the new country

Over the next 50 years at 1787 America experienced new territories and states to the union.

-led to many conflicts with Native Americans

-economic booms

Westward expansion

-1803 Louisiana purchase (doubled the size)

-Manifest Destiny (idea the country should expand across the entire continent)

-Government forced natives off the land and pushed them further west.

Internal diversion

-North and south regions began to be in conflict

-South relied on slave labor for their economy

-North relied on trade and manufacturing.

-Many northerners opposed slavery.

-led to the ultimate bomb of the Civil War erupting.

1861-1865 Civil War

-Union victory against the Confederacy brought end to slavery.

After Civil war the country experienced a growth in industry.

In the early 1900s America experienced a large growth in Immigration. (people coming into the country to live)

-immigrants come in to work in the growing factories.

Great Depression and World Wars

-1929 Stock Market crash. Mass unemployment

-FDR's New deal expands the government to create new jobs

-1939 World War 2 began in Europe with Adolf Hitler pushing for world domination.

-1941 Japan attacks the U.S at Pearl Harbor.

-1941-1945 World War 2 leaves devastation across the world.

-The Allies win in 1945!

World war victory greatly expanded the US economy and made it a super power

1960s Civil Rights Movements

-African Americans protested for equal rights. Martin Luther King Jr.

-Congress passed desegregation laws to form better equality.

-where individuals/business make the majority of buying and selling decisions.

-American companies are leaders in medicine, agriculture, entertainment and banking across the globe.

Influence on the world economy

-America imports (takes in) and exports (sell out) many products to other countries.

-Farm products are one of our biggest exports to the world.

-clothing, cars, other household goods are typically imported from China, Japan, India, and others.

-Oil is mixed of import and homemade.

Canada and Mexico are two of America's biggest trade partners.

-Great lakes have auto manufacturing

-Midwest typically has agriculture

-Northwest has forestry and logging

-Southwest has entertainment/technology manufacturing

Culture

American Culture

Culture is a pattern of activities, languages, and habits common to a group of people.

Origins of culture

-people new to the US bring their own culture to the melting pot.

-many different religions

-Christian protestants make up largest group

-Catholic, Islam, Hindu, Judaism, etc..

Food

-Many foods we eat demonstrate the awesome diversity we share in our country.

-pasta, pizza, burritos, tacos,etc...all

-promotes and protects US interest across the globe.

-making decisions through discussion (diplomacy)

-Diplomacy always first way of solving foreign problems

-Sept 11th, Terrorist attacks on the country

-War on Terrorism in Iraq and Afghanistan

-USAID and the Peace Corp work to improve and support food and water supplies to poor countries across the world.

-US works with other countries to prevent or end conflict in countries.

-Private US companies work to provide services as well.

-Oil and gas in the south-central and western Canada.

-Coal in the Rocky and Appalachian mountains.

-Iron exists in eastern Canada and Great lakes.

-Wheat grows in Midwest belts.

-corn belt in the eastern Midwestern states.

-Dairy belts in the Great Lakes region.

-Fruits and Veggies grow in California valleys and Florida.

Cities developed along river systems for transportation.

Population migrates around the countries for different reasons.
