Randomised Controlled Trials

The levels of Evidence Pyramid shows the comparative strength of different types of research e.g. a Randomised Controlled Trial is considered a better source of evidence than a Cohort Study.

The pyramid also shows how common different types of research are likely to be e.g. Systematic Reviews are highly-focused and time-consuming so fewer are published and on limited topics.

N.B. Although the pyramid shows how strong the evidence from different study types should be, this applies only if the study was carried out well; a well-designed cohort study is likely to be better than a poorly carried out RCT.
