Montag meets Clarisse while walking home from work. They engage in deep conversations that really get Montag questioning things. She asks, "Are you happy?"

Montag gets home to find his wife, Mildred, has overdosed on pills. This is another event that adds to Montag's questions and thoughts.

Montag doesn't run into Clarisse on the way home for sometime. He misses their conversations. He asks his wife if she knows what happened to her, and she tell him she was hit by a car and died.

Montag has to burn a house, and instead of losing her books, a woman chooses to burn with the house. Montag smuggles a book from the fire.

Montag tells his wife of the book and hopes they can learn about it together, but she wants no part of it. Instead, Montag turns to Faber, who he previously met, to help him understand the book.

Montag and the other firemen are called to burn a house. When he arrives Montag realizes it is his house. He follows the captain's order and burns his own house. He finds out Mildred is the one who turned him in. He gets in a fight with the fire chief and ends up burning him with a flame thrower.

Montag is now a wanted criminal. He goes on the run and is being chased by the hounds.

Montag turns to Faber, and he tells him to run toward the river and find the railroad tracks for safety. Montag follows his instructions and meets a man named Granger and the book people.

Jets bomb and destroy the city.

Montag and the other book people look for survivors and plan to rebuild the city. They all have memorized books so they carry on the knowledge from them. They can help society learn from their mistakes and benefit from the knowledge found in books.
