Violence against women and girls is a human rights violation and a manifestation of the historically unequal power relations between women and men and of gender-based discrimination. Despite increased global commitments to addressing the issue, violence against women and girls continues to persist in all countries and regions. Violence against women and girls has devastating consequences for survivors, which can result in serious injury and death.
Violence against women and girls hinders social and economic development and reduces productivity. It has enormous direct and indirect costs for countries in terms of the health sector, the police and criminal justice system, legal aid and related expenditures, as well as lost wages and productivity. Concrete measures to accelerate the prevention and elimination of all forms of violence against women and girls are therefore critical and urgent.
The Economic Rights of women broadly include the right to decent work; the right to equal pay for equal work; the right to rest and leisure; the right to be protected against sexual harassment, violence and non-discrimination policies at the place of work, the right to own and inherit property.
