William G. Morgan was a student at the Springhill college in Massachusetts. After graduating, Morgan went on to become director of physical education at the Young Man's Christian Association in Holyoke, Massachusetts. It was there when he devised his new sport which was designed to be a combination of basketball, baseball, tennis and handball.
Morgan was keen for his sport to offer a less physical intense and demanding alternative to Naismith's basketball. He considered the game tennis but he did not want to use rackets but thought a net would be a good idea. He raised the net to be 6 feet, 6 inches just above the head of an average man. For a ball they tried using a basketball but it was too big and too heavy. It wasn't until the 1900's when they designed a lighter smaller ball which opened up a whole new range of tactical and technical possibilities for the sport.
